What are business card boxes?
Business card boxes are small rigid cases that hold printed cards. They take either a stack or a single card shown off in a recessed tray. The lid is joined along the back and lifts like a jewellery case, so it never gets separated from the base. Firms use them to hand over cards, gift cards or key cards in a way that feels considered.
The lid is joined at the back and lifts like a case. Feels like a keepsake case rather than a carton.

How business card boxes are put together
The lid is joined at the back and lifts like a case. Each one is built from five parts:
- Hinged lid
- Printed wrap
- Greyboard walls
- Insert or cavity
- Hinge along the back
Who orders business card boxes?
Most card boxes we make are not for storage. They are for handing something over: a new partner's first cards, a client's membership card, a gift card at a reception desk.
The box turns a small, flat object into something worth keeping on a desk. That is why the buyers are usually marketing or office teams rather than print buyers.
Volume varies a lot. A law firm might need a handful each month for new partners. A hotel can need hundreds of key card cases for an opening. Either way, the box is quoted to the number you need.
- Law firms, estate agents and consultancies giving new staff their first cards
- Hotels and members' clubs presenting key cards or membership cards
- Shops and salons selling gift cards that need to feel like a present
- Agencies sending a premium metal card to a new client
- Event organisers handing over passes or VIP cards
How does a hinged lid card box open?
The lid is joined to the base by a wrapped hinge along the back edge. You lift the front and it swings up, then rests open while the cards are taken out.
Because the lid never comes off, the box stays as one piece in a drawer or on a desk. A small magnet or a ribbon stay can hold it shut if you want a firmer close. The same opening is used on our hinged lid rigid boxes for larger items.
What size box fits a stack of 85 x 55 mm cards?
A standard UK business card is 85 x 55 mm. The box needs a little room around it, or the cards jam and fingers cannot get under them.
Card thickness changes the depth more than people expect. A 400 gsm card is roughly 0.4 to 0.5 mm thick, so 100 cards make a stack of about 45 mm.
Our sizing guide with clearance figures covers the same method for other products.
- Count how many cards each box should hold when full.
- Measure one card and a stack of ten with a steel ruler, in millimetres.
- Multiply the stack of ten to reach your full count, then add about 2 mm of headroom.
- Add about 3 to 4 mm to the length and width for finger room and the insert wall.
- Send these numbers with a sample card if you have one.
A single card in a tray or a full stack?
The photo on this page shows the first option: one dark card resting in a recessed yellow tray, with a notch cut in so a thumb can lift it. It suits metal cards, gift cards and anything you want to present alone.
A stack box is plainer inside. The cards sit in an open well and the box works more like a smart holder.
| Layout | Suits | Depth inside |
|---|---|---|
| Recessed single-card tray | Metal, gift or membership cards | About 25 to 30 mm |
| Open well for one stack | 50 to 100 standard cards | About 25 to 45 mm |
| Twin wells side by side | Two names, or cards and compliment slips | About 45 mm |
| Card tray with a pen channel | Welcome packs and client gifts | About 30 mm |
Board and wrap for a small case
Small boxes show every detail, so the board and wrap need care. The case is greyboard wrapped in paper, and thickness options are available on request.
Thinner board keeps the walls slim, which matters when a box is only 60 mm wide. Thicker board feels weightier in the hand.
Printed or plain paper wraps both work. Our photo uses a burnt orange wrap outside with a mustard tray inside, a contrast that makes the card stand out. Textured and linen-look papers are options on request.
Walls on a card box are short, so the board edge shows more than on a large box. Ask for the wrap to turn fully over the top edge, which hides the grey core when the lid is open.
Printing the lid and the inside
The underside of the lid is seen every time the box opens. A short thank-you line, a welcome message or your logo works well there, and inside print is available on request.
On the outside, a small foil logo or a blind deboss on the lid is usually enough at this size. Spot UV and embossing are options too, along with soft touch, matt or gloss lamination.
Keep text at least 2 to 3 mm from every edge, because the wrap folds over the board there.
Card boxes inside a welcome or client gift
A card box often travels inside something bigger. New starter packs, client thank-you gifts and event welcome kits all use one as a small second reveal.
In that setting the card box should match the larger case, not compete with it. Use the same wrap, or a contrast colour drawn from the same brand palette, so the two read as one set.
If the card box will sit in a larger case, tell us both sizes so the outer insert has a pocket for it. Our corporate gift boxes for client gifting are often ordered alongside these.
Posting small rigid boxes without dents
A card box is light, which is good for postage, but small corners dent easily if a parcel is dropped. Pack it in a padded envelope or a small carton with some fill.
If you send many at once, pack them upright in rows in one carton, with card between layers. Loose card boxes rattle about and rub against each other in transit.
Your order comes made up and packed in outer cartons. It travels free and tracked to your UK address, arriving in 2–3 business days.
Common mistakes with card boxes
Most errors come from sizing the box to the card design file rather than the printed card.
- Measuring a digital file at 85 x 55 mm when the printed cards are slightly larger after trimming.
- Forgetting that rounded corners or a thicker card change how the stack sits.
- Making the tray recess too tight, so the card cannot be lifted without the notch.
- Putting small text on the lid hinge, where it bends.
Ordering business card boxes
Send the card size, how many cards each box holds, the quantity of boxes and your logo. A photo of the card helps.
We reply with a written price, then set your logo onto a free proof. Once you approve that, the cases are made in 4–6 business days. Use our rigid box quote request form or call, email or WhatsApp us.
Business Card Boxes: questions
How many business cards fit in one box?
Whatever count you choose. We size the depth to your stack, so 50 or 100 cards both fit without rattling.
What size is a standard UK business card?
85 x 55 mm. We add a few millimetres around it so the cards lift out easily.
Can a business card box hold a metal card?
Yes. A recessed tray with a thumb notch suits metal and other thick cards, shown on their own.
Does the hinged lid come off the card box?
No. The lid is joined at the back by a wrapped hinge, so it lifts and rests open but stays attached.
Can you add a magnet to keep a card box shut?
Yes. A small magnet or a ribbon stay is optional on a hinged lid card box.
Can we print a thank-you message inside the lid?
Yes. Inside print is available on request, and the underside of the lid is a good place for a short line.
Will gift cards fit the same box as business cards?
Most gift cards are about 86 x 54 mm, close to a business card. Send one anyway so we can size the tray to it.
Can one box hold two different staff members' cards?
Yes. A twin-well tray keeps two stacks apart in one box, each about 45 mm deep for 100 cards.
Is a foil logo readable on such a small lid?
Yes, if the logo is not too fine. Keep thin lines above about 0.3 mm so the foil fills them cleanly.
Can business card boxes sit inside a larger gift box?
Yes. Tell us both sizes and the larger box insert can be cut with a pocket for the card box. See our corporate and PR boxes range for the larger cases.
How long do business card boxes take to make?
Making them takes 4–6 business days once your free proof is signed off. Delivery follows within 2–3 business days, tracked and free.
What if the card boxes arrive with a misprint?
Email photos of the fault within 10 days of delivery and the affected boxes are reprinted or refunded.
