What are earring boxes?

Earring boxes are small rigid boxes made for a single pair, usually with a slotted or pierced pad that grips the posts. Ours use a sliding drawer: a tray slides out of a wrapped sleeve when you pull a ribbon or tab. They are sized to the pair in millimetres, from tiny studs to long drops.

How earring boxes are put together

A tray slides out of a wrapped sleeve, pulled by a ribbon or tab. Each one is built from five parts:

  1. Outer sleeve
  2. Printed wrap
  3. Greyboard sleeve and tray
  4. Insert in the tray
  5. Ribbon or tab pull

What is a drawer-style earring box?

It is two rigid parts: an outer sleeve open at both ends or one end, and a tray that slides inside it. Both are wrapped greyboard.

A short ribbon or card tab on the tray's end gives you something to pull. The tray glides out and the earrings appear, sitting on their pad.

Our first and fourth photos show coral drawer boxes, with the tray part-way out and a small tab pull at the front.

Why does a drawer suit earrings?

Earrings are small, and a lid that lifts off makes them look smaller. A drawer brings them towards the person opening it, at eye level, one slow pull at a time.

The sleeve also guards the tray on all four long sides. Nothing pushes a lid open in a bag or a parcel, so studs stay on their pad.

The same sleeve and tray, in larger sizes, make our sliding drawer rigid boxes for gift sets.

A drawer box also reuses well. Many buyers keep it on a dressing table for the same pair, which keeps your name in view.

Who buys earring boxes?

A drawer box only 20 to 25 mm deep slips through most letterboxes inside a padded envelope, which suits online sellers.

For a market stall, a stack of small drawer boxes in one colour also makes a neat display on its own.

  • Makers selling studs and drops through online shops
  • Jewellers who want a smaller box than their necklace case
  • Piercing studios selling a first pair of studs as a gift
  • Bridal sellers matching earrings to a necklace in the same colour
  • Gift brands posting a pair in a letterbox-sized parcel

How do you hold studs, hoops and drops?

Our third photo shows gold flower studs pushed through a black pad, the most common layout for a single pair. For the trade-offs between pad materials, our guide to inserts for rigid boxes helps.

Heavy statement earrings need a firmer pad, or they lean forward when the tray is pulled. Large hoops look best standing upright in a slit, so the full circle shows as the tray slides out.

Earring typeHow the pad holds itTray depth
StudsTwo small holes or a slit grip the posts, backs fitted behindAbout 20 mm
HoopsA slit holds the hoop upright, or it lies in a shallow wellAbout 25 mm
Drops and danglesHooks pass through a slit near the top of the padAbout 25 mm
Climbers and cuffsA shaped well holds the curve25 to 30 mm

What size earring box do you need?

Measure the full drop of the earring from the top of the post or hook to the bottom. Add 15 to 20 mm so the pad has room around it.

Most studs fit a tray about 50 mm square. Longer drops need 80 mm or more, so they hang straight instead of curling.

Depth follows the thickest part, such as a pearl or a raised stone. Add 5 mm above it, so nothing presses when the tray slides back in.

If you sell several lengths, two sizes usually cover the range: a small one for studs and a taller one for drops and hoops.

Pulls, wraps and colour

The pull is the first thing a buyer touches. A ribbon loop feels soft and gift-like, while a wrapped card tab, like the coral one in our photos, is neater and flatter.

Greyboard forms the sleeve and tray, with thickness options on request. Printed or plain paper wraps both, and textured or linen-look papers are options.

Tray and sleeve can differ in colour. A grey tray inside a coral sleeve, as in our first photo, adds a second colour without any print.

Put the pull on the end that faces the buyer when the logo reads the right way up.

Can an earring box be a lid and base instead?

Yes. Two of our photos show the lift-off version: a black lid over a white base, and pale yellow and green squares with matching lids.

A lid box is a little quicker to fill at a busy counter. A drawer is more of an occasion. Tell us which you want and we quote it.

If your earrings often sell with a chain, a matching hinged necklace box with a pad keeps the set together.

Logos and finishes for a small box

The sleeve top is the main face. A logo about 20 mm wide, foil blocked or debossed, fits most earring boxes without crowding.

Soft touch, matt or gloss lamination, embossing and spot UV are options. Our designers place the artwork for free and show both the sleeve and the tray on the proof.

The end of the tray is a second, smaller face. A short word or your initials there shows each time the drawer slides out.

Posting earring boxes safely

Drawer boxes travel well because the tray cannot fall open. The risk is the tray sliding part-way out if the parcel is squeezed end to end.

A paper band or a sticker across the sleeve opening stops that. It also gives the buyer something to break, which feels like opening a sealed gift.

For several boxes in one parcel, lay them flat in a row with filler at each end. Standing them on end puts the weight on the pad and can push studs through.

Protect the pull end as well, so a ribbon loop is not crushed or torn on the way.

Earring boxes usually sit inside a wider family of packaging. The full range of jewellery and watch boxes shows the matching styles.

Mistakes on earring box orders

  1. Sizing for the earring alone and forgetting the backs and the pad.
  2. Choosing a pull too thin to grip, so the tray is hard to open.
  3. Using a slit pad for heavy drops, which then sag and twist.
  4. Placing the logo where the sleeve opening will cut through it.
  5. Picking a tray depth that lets pearls rub on the sleeve.

How to order earring boxes

Send the earring sizes, the pad style, the pull and the quantity. A written price comes back for exactly that order.

Our designers prepare a free proof of the sleeve and tray. Production then runs for 4–6 business days. Free tracked delivery to your UK address follows in 2–3 business days.

Earring Boxes: questions

How do earrings stay in place in a drawer box?

The posts push through holes or a slit in the pad, with the backs fitted behind. Hooks pass through a slit near the top.

Will an earring drawer box fit through a letterbox?

A tray 20 to 25 mm deep fits most letterboxes inside a padded envelope. Check the total depth with the envelope included.

Is a ribbon pull or a tab pull better?

A ribbon loop feels softer and more like a gift. A wrapped tab is flatter and neater, and less likely to catch in a parcel.

Can the tray and sleeve be different colours?

Yes. A contrast tray inside the sleeve is a simple way to add a second colour.

What size box fits small stud earrings?

Most studs fit a tray about 50 mm square and 20 mm deep.

Can long drop earrings fit a drawer box?

Yes. Drops up to about 50 mm fit a tray around 80 mm square, so they hang straight on the pad.

Can one earring box hold two pairs?

Yes. The pad can be pierced for two pairs side by side. Tell us the sizes and we draw the layout on the proof.

Does the drawer slide out too easily?

The tray is a friction fit, so it stays put until pulled. We size sleeve and tray as a pair to keep the fit even.

Can the earring pad carry my logo?

Yes. A small foil or printed logo can go on the pad above the earrings.

Do earring boxes arrive with the pad fitted?

Yes. They arrive made up, tray inside the sleeve, with the pad in place.

Can I have earring boxes with a lid instead of a drawer?

Yes. A lift-off lid version is available, like the black and white box in our photos. Talk to our team about box styles if you are unsure which suits you.

Do earring drawer boxes need a ribbon to stay shut?

No. The friction fit holds the tray closed. A paper band round the sleeve can add a seal for gifts.
