What are flower boxes?

Flower boxes are rigid drums with a fitted lid, made for arrangements where the stems are cut short and packed close so the heads form a dome. The box is the vase, the display and the gift wrap in one. Florists usually keep the lid for delivery and let the customer lift it off.

A round lid slides off a rigid tube or drum. A gentle draw as the lid slides off.

How flower boxes are put together

A round lid slides off a rigid tube or drum. Each one is built from five parts:

  1. Round lid
  2. Printed wrap
  3. Rolled board tube
  4. Insert or base disc
  5. Lid fit on the tube

What is a flower box?

A flower box is a round or shaped drum built from rigid board, with a lid that slides on and off. The florist fills it with a liner and floral foam, cuts the stems short and packs the heads tightly. The result is a dome of flowers sitting just above the rim.

Our photos show the three common types: a tall black round box with roses and a red printed ribbon, a burgundy heart with a black bow, and a red heart holding rows of small flowers around a centre piece.

Who orders custom flower boxes?

Flower boxes are ordered mostly by people who sell arranged flowers as a gift rather than loose bunches.

Flower boxes sit in our range of gift and presentation boxes, which also covers round gift drums.

  • High street and online florists building a signature box arrangement
  • Preserved and dried flower sellers whose arrangements last for months
  • Gift shops adding a flower box line for Valentine's Day and Mother's Day
  • Wedding and event planners using boxed flowers as table pieces or thank-you gifts

How does a flower box open?

Lift the lid and it rises clear of the rim in one movement. Friction holds it in place, with no hinge or magnet, so there is nothing to crush the flower heads when it opens.

Many florists deliver with the lid on and let the customer lift it, which makes the opening part of the gift. Others display the box open on the counter with the lid tucked underneath. Both work because the lid is a separate piece. Some shops photograph every finished box open on the counter before it leaves, and a lid that comes away cleanly makes that quick.

What size flower box do I need for 20 roses?

Rose heads sit about 40 to 50 mm across when packed tightly in a dome. Twenty roses usually need a round box about 190 to 210 mm across on the inside. Nine roses fit a box about 130 mm across, and around 36 need about 250 mm.

Height depends on your foam and how high you want the dome. A wider box with the same stem count gives a looser, more natural look, while a tight box makes a firm, polished dome. Pick the style first, then the size. Most florists aim for the heads to rise 20 to 40 mm above the rim, so the inside height is set by the foam block, not by the flowers.

Round or heart: which flower box shape?

Round drums are the everyday choice. They suit a dome of one flower, stack in pairs on a delivery van floor and come in nesting sizes. The tall round box in our photos is often called a hatbox style.

Heart boxes are for Valentine's Day, anniversaries and proposals. They are lower, so the arrangement is a flat carpet of heads, sometimes with a small keepsake in the middle. Shapes beyond round and heart are quoted per order. A heart needs more care when filling, because the point and the two curves at the top leave odd gaps that small heads or leaves have to fill.

If you also sell candles or treats, a round gift box with a ribbon lid uses the same build in a shorter drum.

Can fresh flowers go straight into a rigid box?

Not without a liner. The box is board wrapped in paper, and wet foam will soften it. Florists line the drum with a plastic liner or tray before the foam goes in, and that is what we design the inside size around.

Preserved and dried arrangements do not need water, so they can sit on a card disc or a dry foam block. Tell us which you sell and we set the inside height to match. A preserved arrangement can sit closer to the lid, since nothing will grow or open further after it is boxed.

  1. Decide the number of stems and the dome height you want.
  2. Measure the liner or tray you use, if you have one already.
  3. Send the inside diameter and height, or the stem count, and we suggest a size.
  4. Approve the proof, then allow 4–6 business days of production.

Wraps, ribbon bands and print

Black, red, burgundy, blush and white are the classic wraps for flower boxes because they frame the flower colour rather than compete with it. Textured or linen-look papers are options for a softer look.

The printed ribbon band in our photos carries a short message around the body. A ribbon bow can also be fixed on the lid. Foil blocking of your shop name on the lid, or on the band, is the most popular finish. Our guide to foil and embossed finishes explains what artwork each one needs.

Delivering flower boxes safely

Flower boxes are usually hand delivered by the florist, sitting upright in a van or car. For that, the box itself is enough; a non-slip mat on the floor helps on corners.

If you post preserved arrangements, keep the lid on and put the box in a square outer carton with fill at every corner. Mark the carton with an arrow so it travels upright. Preserved heads are delicate and bruise if the box spends a journey on its side.

Common mistakes with flower boxes

  • Sizing the box to the flower heads instead of to the liner and foam
  • Picking a pale cream paper when staff will touch it with damp fingers all day
  • Making the box too tall, so the dome sits below the rim and looks sunken
  • Leaving the shop name off the box, when it is photographed and shared often

Ordering flower boxes for your shop

Send the shape, sizes and quantity you want, plus the wrap colour and any ribbon or foil. Most florists order two or three sizes at once so they can offer a small, medium and large arrangement. Busy weeks such as Valentine's Day and Mother's Day use up stock fast, so many shops order their main size in a larger run and the rest in smaller ones.

Every order is quoted in writing. Our designers place your shop name on the lid and band for free and send a proof. If you would like to talk it through first, our contact page lists phone and WhatsApp.

Flower Boxes: questions

Are rigid flower boxes waterproof?

No. They are board wrapped in paper. For fresh flowers, use a plastic liner or tray inside the drum before adding wet foam.

Can I order heart-shaped flower boxes?

Yes. Heart drums are made the same way as round ones, with a lid that slides off. They are quoted per order.

What colour flower box shows red roses best?

Black, white and blush wraps give red roses the most contrast. Red on red works too, as in our heart photo, but the flowers blend into the box.

Can a flower box have a printed ribbon band with a message?

Yes, as an option. A short line such as a greeting or your shop name can run around the body on a ribbon band.

How tall should a flower box be for a rose dome?

Set the height so the heads rise 20 to 40 mm above the rim. That usually means an inside height of 120 to 200 mm, depending on the diameter.

Do flower boxes come in nesting sizes?

Round flower boxes can be made in two or three sizes that nest, which saves storage space in a small shop.

Can I use flower boxes for preserved or dried flowers?

Yes. Preserved and dried arrangements suit rigid boxes well because they need no water and can sit on a card disc or dry foam.

Will the lid of a flower box crush the flowers?

Not if the dome height is planned. Leave space between the top of the heads and the inside of the lid if you deliver with the lid on.

Can a flower box be delivered with the lid off?

Yes. Many florists deliver open, with the lid tucked under the base or carried separately.

Can my shop name be foiled on a flower box lid?

Yes. Foil blocking on the lid is the most common finish for florists. It shows on your free proof.

Can I order flower boxes for Valentine's Day in time?

Yes, if you order early. Allow for the proof, 4–6 business days of production and 2–3 business days of free tracked UK delivery.

Do you supply the foam and liners for flower boxes?

No. We make the box. Florists use their own liners and foam, and we size the inside of the box to fit them.
