What are clear lid gift boxes?
Clear lid gift boxes are two-piece boxes with a rigid wrapped base and a transparent lid that sits over it. Everything inside is visible from above, so the arrangement does the selling. The base is made to your gift's size in millimetres.
A separate lid lifts straight off the base. A slow lift as air lets the lid go.

How clear lid gift boxes are put together
A separate lid lifts straight off the base. Each one is built from five parts:
- Lift-off lid
- Printed wrap
- Greyboard walls
- Insert or tissue bed
- Lid depth and fit
What is a clear lid gift box?
It is a lid-and-base box where only the base is rigid board. The lid is a clear sheet, scored and folded so it slips over the base like a cap.
Nothing hides the contents. A buyer sees the colours, the layout and the quality before touching the box, which is the whole point.
Because the lid is light, the box feels different from a fully wrapped rigid box. The weight and strength sit in the base, so that is where the board choice matters.
What do the photos show?
Our first two photos show the classic version: a shallow base, one white and one kraft-look, with a clear lid lifted to one side. The kraft base holds a flower and some trimmings.
The third photo shows a base with a sloped front, so the contents tilt towards the viewer. The fourth is a variation where a clear sleeve slides over a kraft tray.
All of them follow the same idea. The base gives structure and the clear part gives the view.
Who chooses a clear lid?
These buyers share one need: the arrangement is the product. A printed lid would hide the work.
A clear lid also suits a market or fair, where shoppers pick boxes up and put them down all day without opening them.
- Florists and dried flower makers boxing posies and buttonholes
- Wedding planners showing favours on a table without opening them
- Craft and gift sellers displaying an arranged set at a market stall
- Accessories brands boxing a bow tie, brooch or hair clip on card
- Candle makers lining up a trio of jars side by side
How does the clear lid fit?
The lid is a few millimetres larger than the base on each side. It slides down over the base walls and sits there by friction, then lifts straight up.
Lid depth is your choice. A shallow lid shows more of the base wall and its print. A deep lid covers the base almost to the table.
The fit is the same as on our wrapped lift-off lid boxes, with the clear sheet in place of a wrapped lid.
A clear lid has no wrap to hide a loose fit, so we cut lid and base as a pair. Too tight and the sheet creases. Too loose and the lid slides off when the box tips.
A clear lid gives a thumb little to hold, so a ribbon pull under one edge helps it lift cleanly.
How tall should the base be?
Low walls show more of the contents. For most gift sets a base about 20 to 60 mm tall is right, with the clear lid taking up the rest of the height.
Tall items need a deeper base or a deeper lid. Measure the tallest point, add 5 mm, and split that height between base and lid.
For a sloped base like our third photo, give us the front and back wall heights separately.
- Lay the gift out exactly as you want it seen.
- Measure the length and width of the arrangement and add 5 mm each way.
- Measure the tallest point and add 5 mm.
- Choose a base wall height, then the lid makes up the difference.
- Send us the numbers and a photo of the layout.
Base board and wrap options
The base is greyboard with thickness options on request, wrapped in printed or plain paper. Kraft-look, white and coloured papers are all options, as are textured and linen-look wraps.
The base is the only place for most of your print, so use its walls. A logo on the front wall, or a printed band round all four sides, keeps the lid clear.
A printed card or tissue bed inside can carry your name too, seen through the lid.
For heavier sets, such as candles in glass jars, ask for a thicker board so the base stays flat when lifted from one end.
A coloured card bed inside the base can carry your colour too. Seen from above through the lid, it frames the gift.
Keeping the contents in place
In a clear box, anything that slides is seen sliding. A fitted insert matters more than in a closed box.
A card insert with slots holds flat items. Foam or satin-lined inserts suit glass and jewellery. A shallow tray with a raised centre can lift a small item into view.
Our guide on choosing inserts for rigid boxes compares card, foam and satin.
Clear lid or window lid?
If you want a printed lid with a peek inside, a rigid box with a window cut-out is the closer fit.
| Question | Clear lid | Window lid |
|---|---|---|
| How much shows? | The whole top view | A framed part |
| Where does the print go? | Base walls and insert | Lid top and walls |
| Best contents | Arrangements and sets | One hero item |
| Hand feel | Light, display-first | Solid, closed box feel |
Posting clear lid boxes
Clear lids show scuffs, so pack each box in a shipper with soft filler on top. Do not tape directly onto the lid.
A paper band or ribbon round the box holds the lid down in transit. Stack boxes base to base in a carton, never lid on lid.
For a shop display, keep spare lids flat in their packing until you need them. A clear lid that has been bent shows a pale crease line that will not come out.
Mistakes to avoid
Each of these costs less to fix on the proof than after production. Tell us how the boxes will be used and stored, and we will flag anything that looks risky.
- Base walls so tall they hide the arrangement
- No insert, so items slide to one corner on the way
- Artwork planned for the lid, where there is nowhere to print
- Stacking lid on lid during storage, which marks the clear sheet
- A lid so deep that it hides the printed base wall

Clear Lid Gift Boxes: questions
Is the whole lid clear on a clear lid gift box?
Yes. The lid is one clear sheet folded into shape. Only the base is wrapped board.
Can the clear lid be printed?
Ask us about your design when you request a price. Most buyers keep the lid plain and print the base walls and the insert instead.
Can the base have a sloped front like in the photo?
Yes. A sloped front tilts the contents toward the viewer. Send the angle or the heights of the front and back walls.
Is there a sleeve version with a clear cover?
Yes. Our fourth photo shows a clear sleeve sliding over a kraft tray. Tell us if you want that layout rather than a lift-off lid.
How do I stop dried flowers moving inside?
A card bed with a slot or a small tie point holds the stems. Tell us the stem length and we size the insert.
Will a clear lid gift box hold candles?
Yes, if the base is sized to the jars and an insert keeps them apart. A trio in a row is a common layout.
Can the base be kraft-look rather than white?
Yes. Kraft-look, white, coloured and textured wrap papers are all options for the base.
Do clear lid boxes arrive assembled?
Yes. The bases arrive made up with their lids, ready to fill.
Can you add a ribbon to a clear lid box?
Yes. A ribbon tied round the box keeps the lid on and adds colour. Ribbon ties and pulls are options.
How do I keep clear lids free of fingerprints?
Handle lids by the edges when filling, and store boxes base to base. A soft cloth removes most marks before packing.
Can I see my logo on a box before ordering?
Yes. Try it in the Design Your Box page, then send it with your sizes.
Are clear lid boxes good for wedding favours?
They are popular for favours because guests can see what is inside on the table. Small sizes around 80 to 120 mm suit most favours.
