What are rigid gift boxes?

Rigid gift boxes are made-up boxes of wrapped greyboard with the lid hinged along the back and a front flap that shuts on hidden magnets. They are built to be opened by the person receiving the gift, so the inside is finished as carefully as the outside. Ribbon ties, linings and inserts are options on request.

The lid lifts on a spine and a front flap holds shut with hidden magnets. A soft click as the flap meets the box.

How rigid gift boxes are put together

The lid lifts on a spine and a front flap holds shut with hidden magnets. Each one is built from five parts:

  1. Lid and spine
  2. Printed wrap
  3. Greyboard walls
  4. Insert or tissue bed
  5. Flap with hidden magnets

What is a rigid gift box?

It is the box that gets kept. A rigid gift box is built from greyboard that does not fold, wrapped in paper, and finished on the inside as well as the outside. The person who opens it sees the lining, the ribbon and the bed the gift sits on.

Our photos show three common looks: a bronze metallic box with a gold ribbon bow, a pale pink box with a matching ribbon, and kraft, pink and navy boxes lined with satin.

Who uses custom rigid gift boxes?

Gift boxes are ordered by people who sell or give a finished gift, not a single product. The box has to suit several items at once.

Gift boxes sit within our wider gift and presentation box range, alongside round, flower and wedding boxes.

  • Gift shops and online hamper sellers building their own sets
  • Candle, soap and home fragrance makers selling bundles for birthdays and Mother's Day
  • Event planners and bridal shops putting together bridesmaid and thank-you gifts
  • Small brands launching a pamper or self-care set for Valentine's Day or Eid

How does a magnetic gift box open and close?

Picture a book lying flat: the back edge is the spine, the lid swings up from it, and a flap folds down over the front wall. Thin magnets sit under the wrap of the flap and the front wall, so the box closes with a soft click and nothing shows.

A ribbon tie is usually fixed under the flap on each side. Tying it is decoration more than security, because the magnets keep the box shut. Many buyers like the moment of pulling the bow before the lid lifts. It slows the opening down by a few seconds, which is exactly what a gift should do.

If you want the technical detail on magnet placement and flap depth, see our page on magnetic closure boxes made to size.

What size gift box do I need for a gift set?

Lay every item out exactly as it should sit in the box, including tissue, cards and shred. Measure the outer edges of that layout. Then add about 5 mm on each side if items sit in an insert, or 10 mm if they rest on shred.

Height is the measurement people get wrong. A bow tied on top of the lid adds nothing inside, but a tall jar or bottle in the middle sets the depth for the whole box. If one item is much taller than the rest, think about laying it on its side in a shaped insert. A shallower box costs less board, looks more generous across the top and fits more easily inside a shipping carton.

  1. Choose the largest item first and place the rest around it.
  2. Measure length, width and the height of the tallest item.
  3. Add your clearance for tissue or an insert.
  4. Send those inside sizes and the list of contents with your quote request.

Satin, card or shred: what should the gift sit on?

The bed inside the box changes how the gift reads when the lid opens. Each option has a different job.

More detail on each choice is in our guide to rigid box inserts.

Wrap papers and colours for gift boxes

Gift boxes take more colour than most rigid boxes. Metallic papers in bronze, gold or silver, pastel plain wraps and textured or linen-look papers are all options, and the ribbon can match or contrast.

If you want the box to work for several occasions, a plain wrap with a small foil logo is the safe choice. Seasonal sleeves or stickers can then change the message without a new box run. Kraft-look paper suits candle makers and hamper sellers with a natural style, while navy or black wraps look right for men's grooming sets.

Which finishes work on a gift box?

Foil blocking is the most requested finish on gift boxes, usually a logo or name centred on the lid. Embossing or debossing adds depth you can feel, and spot UV works on dark wraps where a gloss pattern catches the light.

Soft touch lamination gives a velvety feel on dark colours. Matt or gloss lamination protects a printed wrap from fingerprints, which matters on pale pink and cream boxes. All of these are options and appear on your proof.

Do gift boxes come flat or made up?

A magnetic rigid gift box is made up in our workshop and arrives ready to fill. That gives the cleanest corners but takes more storage space, so check how many boxes of your size fit on a shelf before you choose a large run.

The ribbon boxes in our photos are often sold as a folding version that arrives flat. If space is short, the collapsible rigid box that folds flat works the same way once assembled.

How do I send a gift box by post?

Place the gift box inside a plain outer carton with void fill on all sides. Put the address label on that carton, never on the wrap of the gift box, because labels lift metallic and soft touch finishes when peeled off.

If the ribbon is tied, tuck the tails under the bow so they do not crease in transit. Some senders leave the ribbon untied and let the recipient do it. A printed card on top of the gift, under the lid, tells them who it is from.

Common mistakes when ordering gift boxes

  • Measuring items on their own and forgetting the tissue, cards and shred
  • Choosing a pale uncoated wrap for a box that will be handled at a market stall
  • Asking for a ribbon colour without checking it against the wrap on the proof
  • Ordering a different box for every gift set instead of one size with different inserts

Rigid Gift Boxes: questions

Can the ribbon on a rigid gift box be removed?

The ribbon is usually fixed under the flap during making, so it stays with the box. If you want a loose ribbon you tie yourself, say so on your brief.

What ribbon colours can I have on a gift box?

Ribbon colour is chosen per order to match or contrast your wrap. Name the shade on your brief and the proof shows it beside the wrap.

Can a rigid gift box have a metallic finish?

Yes. Metallic wrap papers in bronze, gold or silver are options, as in the bronze box in our photos. Foil blocking can add a logo on top.

Can I fit a bottle and glasses in one gift box?

Yes, with a card or foam insert holding each piece. Send the bottle height and glass sizes so we can set the depth.

Is a gift box with a satin lining harder to fill?

Not much. The satin is fixed to a padded bed, and the item presses into it. It takes a little longer than dropping in tissue.

Can I use one gift box size for several different sets?

Yes, many sellers do. Keep the outer box the same and change the insert, or use shred, so one box run covers several sets.

Do you make gift boxes for Valentine's Day and Mother's Day?

Yes. The construction is the same; the wrap, ribbon and print change. Order early enough to allow for the proof, 4–6 business days of production and delivery.

Can the inside of the gift box lid carry a message?

Yes. The inside of the lid can be printed with a short message, a pattern or your logo, and it shows on the proof.

Will magnets in a gift box affect the items inside?

The magnets are small and sit inside the front wall and flap. If you are packing anything sensitive to magnets, tell us and we can suggest a lift-off lid instead.

Can a gift box have a handle?

A magnetic gift box is usually carried in a bag rather than by a handle. If you need a carry handle, ask and we will tell you which build suits it.

Can I see a sample gift box before ordering?

Ask when you request your quote and we will tell you what we can send for your size and wrap. Every order starts with a free design proof.

Are gift boxes packed with tissue when they arrive?

No. Gift boxes arrive empty and made up, ready for your own tissue, shred or insert and contents.
