What are magnetic closure boxes?

Magnetic closure boxes are one-piece rigid boxes. A lid attached along the rear edge folds over the top. It ends in a front flap that holds shut on magnets set under the paper, and the box arrives made up, ready to fill.

The lid lifts on a spine and a front flap holds shut with hidden magnets. A soft click as the flap meets the box.

How magnetic closure boxes are put together

The lid lifts on a spine and a front flap holds shut with hidden magnets. Each one is built from five parts:

  1. Lid and spine
  2. Printed wrap
  3. Greyboard walls
  4. Insert or tissue bed
  5. Flap with hidden magnets

What are magnetic closure boxes used for?

This is the box most people picture when they think of a premium gift. The lid sweeps over the top in one movement and the flap snaps down on the front. Nothing to untie, nothing to lose.

Fashion labels use it for knitwear and accessories. Candle and fragrance houses use it for sets. Gifting teams like it because staff can open, fill and close it at a packing table without any training.

Still choosing between styles? Our guide to how each rigid box style opens sets the magnetic box beside the drawer, lift-off and book styles.

How does the magnetic flap stay closed?

Two thin magnets sit inside the board. One goes under the wrap on the flap, the other under the wrap on the front wall. You never see them, you only feel the pull as the lid comes down.

Because the lid is fixed at the back, it cannot slide off or get mixed up with another box. That matters on a busy packing day with hundreds of boxes on the bench.

Magnet strength is matched to the box. A small jewellery box needs a light pull; a wide hamper lid needs a firmer one so it does not spring open.

  • The lid stays attached, so nothing goes missing between packing and unboxing
  • The flap closes on its own once it is near the front wall
  • The box can be opened and closed many times, so it keeps a second life as storage
  • There is no ribbon to tie, which speeds up packing on a large send-out

How big should a magnetic box be for my product?

Measure the item, or the item in its insert, then add a few millimetres each way. A gap of 3 to 5 mm on length and width is usual. On height, leave room for tissue or a lid insert if you plan one.

Tell us the inside size you want and we work out the outside size from the board thickness. A box that is too tight strains the flap. One that is too loose lets the product rattle when the courier lifts it.

The flap depth follows the height of the box. On a shallow box it may cover most of the front wall.

Board and wrap

Underneath sits a greyboard shell, and you can ask for a thicker or thinner board. Over that goes the wrap. Choose printed paper in your artwork, a plain coloured paper, or a textured or linen-look paper with a feel under the hand.

The black boxes in our photos use a plain matt wrap outside and a white paper lining inside. The open box on the pink background shows a different idea: a bold pattern on one side wall only, with a purple lining.

Pick the wrap with the room in mind. A dark matt paper looks calm on a shop counter. A loud printed paper works harder in a photo on social media.

Can a magnetic box hold an insert?

Yes. A card insert with cut cavities suits sets of jars or bottles. Foam suits glass or anything that must not touch its neighbour. A satin-lined insert suits jewellery and small leather goods.

Send us the items, or exact measurements, and we cut the insert to match. Our page on rigid boxes built around fitted inserts shows the cavity styles in more detail.

Which print and finish options work best?

Any of our finishes can go on this box as an option. The table shows where each one tends to sit on a magnetic box, and why.

Finish optionWhere it usually goesWhy people choose it
Soft touch laminationWhole outer wrapVelvety feel, hides fingerprints on dark colours
Foil blockingLogo on the lidCatches the light when the box is turned
DebossingLogo or a line on the lidA quiet mark you feel more than see
Spot UVPattern or logo on a matt wrapGloss against matt, visible at an angle
Inside printUnderside of the lidA message the customer sees on opening

Look closely at the first photo and you can see a fine debossed line across the lid. Small touches like that cost little and read as care.

Why do customers keep magnetic boxes?

A box with a fixed lid that still closes properly gets reused. People keep cables, letters, watches or make-up in them for years. Your logo stays on a shelf in their home long after the gift is gone.

That is also why the inside matters. A printed lining or a short note under the lid greets the owner on every opening, not just the first.

How do I post a magnetic box without damage?

Rigid board shrugs off most knocks, yet the wrap can scuff and a corner can dent in a parcel network. Put the filled box inside a plain corrugated shipper with a little void fill on every side.

Choose a shipper about 10 to 20 mm larger than the gift box in each direction. A loose box sliding inside a big shipper takes more damage than one held snug. You can see how we send your order on our free tracked UK delivery page.

Keep the rigid box clean of tape. Seal the shipper, never the gift box itself, so the wrap is not torn when the customer opens it.

What mistakes should I avoid?

Most problems we see come from a few early decisions. Each one is easy to fix at the brief stage and hard to fix later.

  • Sizing to the product but forgetting the insert, so the flap will not close
  • Placing the logo where the flap fold will cut through it
  • Choosing a very pale wrap without soft touch, then seeing every fingerprint
  • Ordering a heavy item in a box with no insert, so it slides and dents a wall

How do I order magnetic closure boxes?

Ordering takes a short brief and one proof round. Every order is quoted in writing before anything is made.

Got a logo but no finished artwork? Try it on a lid in Design Your Box on our site before you send the brief.

  1. Send the inside size in millimetres, or describe the product that goes in.
  2. Tell us the quantity, the wrap colour or artwork, and any finish or insert you want.
  3. A written price comes back with a free proof, your artwork set on the lid by our designers.
  4. Sign off the proof and the run goes into production for 4–6 business days.
  5. The boxes travel to you made up, with free tracked UK delivery in 2–3 business days.

Magnetic Closure Boxes: questions

Where are the magnets on a magnetic closure box?

They sit inside the board, under the wrap, one in the front flap and one in the front wall. They do not show on the outside or the inside.

How strong is the magnetic closure?

Strong enough to keep the lid shut when the box is carried or tipped. It still opens with a light pull on the flap edge.

Can the lid of a magnetic box come off?

No. The back edge is wrapped in one piece with the base, so the lid stays attached.

Do magnetic boxes arrive flat?

No, these arrive made up and ready to fill. If storage space is tight, our collapsible version folds flat and closes on magnets after assembly.

Can I put a ribbon on a magnetic closure box?

Yes, a ribbon pull can be added at the flap edge as an option. It helps people find where to lift.

Is a magnetic box good for heavy items?

It handles bottles and sets well with the right board and an insert. Tell us the weight and we suggest a board thickness.

Can you print the inside of the lid?

Yes, as an option. Most brands put a short thank-you or their story on the lid underside, since it faces the customer as the box opens.

What is the smallest magnetic box you can make?

We size each box to the product, so there is no fixed smallest size. Very small boxes need a shorter flap, which we show you on the proof.

Will the wrap scratch in transit?

Any wrap can scuff in a parcel network. Lamination as an option and a corrugated shipper around the box both help.

How many magnetic boxes do I need to order?

There is no set quantity on this page. Each order is quoted per run, so send the number you have in mind and we price it.

Can a magnetic box have a window?

A window cut into the lid is possible, though it reduces stiffness. Our window boxes page covers the lift-off styles built for that.

What should I send for a quote on magnetic boxes?

The inside size or the product, the quantity, your artwork or colour and any finish. Our quote request form asks for exactly these.
