What are sliding drawer boxes?

Sliding drawer boxes are two rigid parts: an open-ended sleeve and a tray that fits inside it. A ribbon or tab on the tray end lets the customer draw it out. Both parts are greyboard wrapped in paper, so the box stays square and firm in the hand.

A tray slides out of a wrapped sleeve, pulled by a ribbon or tab. A slow reveal as the tray slides into view.

How sliding drawer boxes are put together

A tray slides out of a wrapped sleeve, pulled by a ribbon or tab. Each one is built from five parts:

  1. Outer sleeve
  2. Printed wrap
  3. Greyboard sleeve and tray
  4. Insert in the tray
  5. Ribbon or tab pull

Who uses sliding drawer boxes?

Jewellers like the drawer because the piece appears gradually, framed by the tray walls. Accessory labels use it for cufflinks, pocket squares and leather card holders. Skincare and tea brands use it for sample sets laid out in a row.

It also suits anything you want to keep closed without a lid. The tray cannot fall off the way a lid can, and there is no flap to catch on a bag lining.

Subscription brands like it too. A drawer slipped into a mailer feels like a small present inside the parcel, and the sleeve can carry the month or the edition.

How does a drawer box open?

The customer holds the sleeve and pulls the ribbon or tab. The tray slides out on a friction fit. It stays put when the box is tilted, yet moves with one finger.

Our photos show three pull styles. The grey box with the yellow tray uses a short black ribbon loop. The charcoal box uses a small wrapped tab. The cream printed box has a ribbon tucked low on the tray end.

A push-through thumb hole on the opposite end of the sleeve is another option. It lets people slide the tray out from behind instead of pulling.

What size drawer box fits my product?

Measure the product and add 3 to 4 mm on length and width for the tray. The sleeve is then made a touch larger than the tray outside size, so the two parts slide without binding.

Height is where people go wrong. The tray walls should be at least as tall as the item, or the item scrapes on the sleeve roof as it slides. Our guide on measuring and sizing a rigid box has the clearance numbers worked through.

Send us one finished product if you can. Measuring the real item avoids surprises from rounded corners or clasps that stick out.

Sleeve and tray materials

Both parts are built from greyboard, with board thickness options on request. A thicker board makes a heavier, more solid feel, which suits a larger drawer for a watch or a set.

The sleeve and tray can use different wraps. A grey sleeve over a yellow tray, as in one of our photos, gives a flash of colour as the drawer opens. A plain kraft-tone tray inside a dark sleeve feels quieter.

Wrap direction matters on the sleeve. The paper turns in at both open ends, so the edges the customer touches are smooth and folded, not cut.

  • Printed paper wrap with your pattern on the sleeve
  • Plain coloured paper on the tray for contrast
  • Textured or linen-look paper for a cloth feel
  • Inside print on the tray floor, on request

Which inserts work in a drawer tray?

The tray is shallow and open, so inserts sit flat and are seen the moment it slides out. A slit card insert holds earrings or rings. A foam pad with cut cavities holds sample vials upright. A satin-lined base suits a bracelet laid in a curve.

For a set of small items, ask for a divided card insert. It stops pieces sliding to one end when the tray is pulled.

Tell us what each piece weighs. Heavier items need a firmer insert so they stay in their slot as the tray moves.

How do drawer boxes compare with other rigid styles?

Drawer boxes are often weighed up against hinged and lift-off boxes for small, valuable items. The table sets out the differences people ask about.

If a box should snap open like a ring case, look at our hinged lid rigid boxes instead.

Print and finish options

The sleeve top is your main panel. Add foil, a raised or pressed logo, or a patch of spot UV there as options. The charcoal box in our photos has a small gold foil triangle on both sleeve and tray. The two marks line up when the drawer is shut.

Soft touch lamination suits a sleeve that will be handled a lot, because the drawer is gripped every time it opens. Matt or gloss lamination are the other choices.

Keeping the box after the gift

Drawer boxes have a long life on dressing tables. People use them for rings, hair clips, keys and spare buttons. A printed sleeve with your name keeps working for you in that second life.

Printing the tray floor is worth considering here. Once the product is gone, the floor is what shows each time the drawer is opened.

Corporate buyers notice this as well. A drawer of business cards or pin badges can sit on a desk for months. A clean sleeve with a small logo is often enough.

Sending drawer boxes by post

A drawer can creep open if the parcel is dropped on its end. A paper band or a small sticker across the sleeve and tray holds it shut, and the customer breaks it on opening.

Then pack the box in a corrugated shipper with a little void fill. If a band or seal is new to you, our guide comparing card, foam and satin inserts also covers how to stop contents moving.

Mailer boxes with a snug fit suit drawer boxes well. Leave about 10 mm around the sleeve and fill the gap with crinkle paper.

Common mistakes with drawer boxes

  • Making the tray too tight, so it sticks after a damp week in storage
  • Leaving the pull off, so people prise the tray out with a fingernail
  • Setting the logo on the tray end only, where it hides when the box is shut
  • Forgetting the band, then finding drawers half open on arrival

How do I order sliding drawer boxes?

Send a short brief and we do the rest. Every order is quoted in writing before work starts.

  1. Give us the item size or the tray inside size in millimetres.
  2. Choose sleeve and tray wraps, the pull style and any insert.
  3. Add your quantity and any finish, such as foil on the sleeve.
  4. Check the free proof and ask for changes until it is right.
  5. Production runs 4–6 business days from your approval, then the drawers reach you by free tracked UK delivery in 2–3 business days.

Sliding Drawer Boxes: questions

Can a drawer box tray slip out when tipped?

Not with a correct fit. The tray is sized to hold by friction when the box is tilted, and a paper band adds security in the post.

Can a drawer box have a pull at both ends?

Yes. Ribbon or tab pulls can go on one or both short ends as an option.

What is the ribbon pull on a drawer box made of?

A short loop of ribbon, fixed under the tray wrap so its ends never show. Name a colour and we match it as closely as we can.

Can the sleeve and tray be different colours?

Yes. Each part has its own wrap, so contrast between sleeve and tray is common.

Is a drawer box suitable for a necklace?

For a short necklace, yes. Longer chains usually sit better in a flat hinged box with a hook insert.

Can you put a window in the sleeve?

A window in the sleeve top is possible for a light item. It weakens the panel, so we keep it small and show it on the proof.

How deep can a drawer tray be?

There is no fixed limit, but deep trays slide less smoothly. Most of our drawer boxes are between 25 and 60 mm inside height.

Do drawer boxes come made up?

Yes. They arrive made up, with each tray already inside its sleeve.

Can I print inside the drawer tray?

Yes, inside print on the tray floor or walls is available on request.

Are drawer boxes good for sample kits?

They work well. A divided insert keeps vials or sachets in order as the tray slides.

What finish stops a drawer sleeve looking worn?

Soft touch or matt lamination as an option helps, because the sleeve is gripped every time the drawer opens.

Can I see a drawer box with my logo first?

Yes. You get a free design proof, and you can try your logo in advance on our Design Your Box page.
