What are shoulder boxes?

Shoulder boxes are rigid boxes built in three parts. There is a wrapped base, a neck that rises above the base walls, and a lid that slides down over the neck. The lid stops on the base edge, the shoulder, so a strip of the neck stays on show.

The lid rests on a raised inner neck that shows a band of colour. A visible step between lid and base before it opens.

How shoulder boxes are put together

The lid rests on a raised inner neck that shows a band of colour. Each one is built from five parts:

  1. Lid
  2. Printed wrap on base
  3. Raised neck in greyboard
  4. Insert or cavity
  5. Shoulder where the lid rests

What is a shoulder box?

Picture a lift-off box with an extra wall inside. That inner wall, the neck, stands taller than the base. The lid slides down over it and comes to rest on the top edge of the base.

The ledge where the lid stops is the shoulder. It leaves a neat band of the neck showing all the way round, which is the detail people notice first. If you want the simpler two-part version, see our lift-off lid boxes in two parts.

Because the neck adds a third layer of board at the walls, the box feels heavier and stiffer than its size suggests. That weight in the hand is part of why it reads as premium.

Who uses shoulder boxes?

Perfumers, candle makers and skincare brands are the main users. A single bottle or jar sits in the base, held by an insert, and the lid lifts away to show it standing up.

Jewellers use smaller ones for rings and earrings. Watch sellers use a squarer shape with a cushion. In each case there is one item, and the box treats it as the whole point.

Gift shops use them for a single scented candle or a boxed diffuser. Hotels and spas use small ones for a branded keepsake left in a room.

How does the lid sit on the neck?

The neck is glued inside the base and stands proud of it. The lid is made to slide over the neck with a close fit. As you lift, the lid draws up the neck with a little resistance, then comes free.

That gentle drag is part of the appeal. It slows the opening down, and the lid will not drop away if someone lifts the whole box by its top.

The grey box in our photos shows the build clearly: the base, the neck rising above it and the lid set to one side.

How tall should the neck be?

The visible part of the neck is usually 10 to 25 mm. Less than that and the band looks like a mistake. Much more and the box starts to look like two boxes stacked.

The table gives a guide by box height. We set the final number on your proof.

Box heightVisible neckEffect
Under 60 mmabout 8 to 12 mmA fine line, suits rings and small jars
60 to 120 mmabout 12 to 20 mmA clear band, suits most fragrance and candles
Over 120 mmabout 18 to 25 mmA bold step, suits tall bottles and diffusers

What size shoulder box fits a perfume bottle?

Measure the bottle including its cap, then decide how it will stand. Most perfume shoulder boxes hold the bottle upright in a cavity insert. Add 3 mm or so each side and allow for the insert under the base.

For a 50 ml bottle, a common inside size is about 70 x 50 x 120 mm. Bottles vary a lot in shape, so we always size from your own bottle or its drawing. Our step-by-step rigid box sizing guide covers clearance for caps and pumps.

Wrap and neck colours

The neck has its own wrap, so you can choose a band of colour that differs from the lid and base. A gold neck on a black box, a white neck on navy, or a matching neck for a quieter look.

The blue box in our photos goes further. Its outer wrap is a printed metallic pattern, and the inside is lined in bright turquoise. When the lid lifts, the colour change is instant.

  • Neck in a contrast colour for a visible band
  • Neck in the base colour for a smooth, single-tone look
  • Printed pattern on the lid and base, plain neck
  • Textured or linen-look paper on the lid only

Inserts that hold one item upright

A shoulder box usually carries a single item, so the insert does the real work. A card or foam insert with a round or shaped cavity holds a bottle, jar or candle glass upright and centred.

You can see a round cavity in the blue box in our photos. For jewellery, a satin-lined pad with a slit holds a ring. Tell us how the item should face when the lid comes off.

Candles in glass need a little extra room above the wick so the lid does not press on it. We allow for that when you tell us the item is a candle.

Finishes for a shoulder box

The lid top and sides carry most of the branding. Foil, embossing or debossing, and spot UV can each go there as options. The grey box in our photos has a debossed pattern on one side of the lid. You notice it only when you pick the box up.

Soft touch lamination suits a matt lid. A gloss lamination suits a printed pattern that should look bright.

Can shoulder boxes go in the post?

Yes, inside an outer shipper. The lid holds well by friction, but a thin paper band around the lid and base adds a seal the customer breaks on opening.

Fill the gap between the box and the shipper so it cannot rock. Glass bottles and candles add weight, so a foam insert and a snug outer carton both matter.

For a send-out of many boxes, pack a test parcel first. Drop it from waist height onto a hard floor and check the band and corners.

Mistakes to avoid with shoulder boxes

These four turn up most often in first briefs. Each is quick to fix before the proof.

  • Choosing a neck so short the band disappears on the shelf
  • Measuring the bottle without its cap or pump
  • Leaving out the insert, so a tall bottle tips inside the base
  • Picking a neck colour that clashes with the lining

How do I order shoulder boxes?

Start with the item and its size. Each order is priced in writing, and you see a free proof before anything is made.

If you want to see your logo on the lid first, our Design Your Box preview page shows it in a few seconds.

  1. Send the item size, or the item itself, with its cap or lid on.
  2. Choose lid, base and neck wraps and the visible neck height.
  3. Add the insert style and any finish options.
  4. Approve the proof; making takes 4–6 business days after that.
  5. Your shoulder boxes then travel free on a tracked service, landing at your UK door in 2–3 business days.

Shoulder Boxes: questions

What is the shoulder on a shoulder box?

It is the top edge of the base, where the lid comes to rest. The neck rises above it, so a band shows between lid and base.

How many parts does a shoulder box have?

Three: a base, a neck fixed inside the base, and a lid that slides over the neck.

Can the neck be a different colour?

Yes. The neck has its own wrap, so a contrast band is easy to add.

Is a shoulder box good for perfume?

It is one of the most used styles for fragrance. A cavity insert holds the bottle upright and centred.

Will the lid of a shoulder box fall off?

No. It slides over the neck with a close fit and holds by friction, even when lifted by the lid.

Can a shoulder box be round?

Our shoulder boxes are square or rectangular. For a round shape, rigid tube boxes are the closer match.

How much of the neck shows?

Usually 10 to 25 mm, depending on the box height. We set it on the proof.

Do shoulder boxes come assembled?

Yes. They arrive fully made up, ready for the insert and the product.

Can I have a candle shoulder box with a printed lining?

Yes. Inside print on the base or lid lining is available on request.

Are shoulder boxes heavier than other rigid boxes?

Slightly, because of the extra neck wall. That extra board also makes them feel more solid.

What finish suits a shoulder box lid?

Soft touch with a foil logo is a common pairing. Embossing, debossing and spot UV are also options.

Where can I compare shoulder boxes with other styles?

Our range of rigid box styles shows every construction side by side.
