What are tie and bow tie boxes?
Tie and bow tie boxes are small two-piece rigid boxes whose lid comes straight off the base. Inside, a card tray or divider keeps a rolled tie, a bow tie and small extras in their own places. They are sized to the neckwear, not to a stock carton.
A separate lid lifts straight off the base. A slow lift as air lets the lid go.

How tie and bow tie boxes are put together
A separate lid lifts straight off the base. Each one is built from five parts:
- Lift-off lid
- Printed wrap
- Greyboard walls
- Insert or tissue bed
- Lid depth and fit
What goes in a tie box?
A tie box holds neckwear so it arrives without kinks. Silk creases when it is folded tight, so most tie boxes are built around a rolled tie or a gentle flat fold.
Our second photo shows the set version: a navy tray holding a patterned tie, a matching bow tie, a pocket square and two cufflinks. A raised card divider keeps each piece in its place.
Bow ties need different thinking. A pre-tied bow has wings that stand up about 40 mm, and a self-tie bow lies flat and long. We size the box to whichever you sell.
Tie boxes sit in our range of boxes for clothing and accessories next to shirt and suit boxes.
Who buys rigid tie and bow tie boxes?
Neckwear is a classic gift, and the box often makes the difference between a nice present and a special one.
- Tie makers and silk printers selling online and at markets
- Menswear shops boxing ties bought as Father's Day or birthday gifts
- Wedding planners ordering matching ties for groomsmen
- Schools, clubs and regiments supplying a crested tie
- Companies giving branded ties or bow ties at events
How does a lift-off tie box open?
The lid lifts straight up off the base. With a rolled tie, the curl of silk is the first thing you see, sitting in the middle like a rosette.
Tie boxes are small, so we often use a deeper lid that covers most of the base. It grips better and stops the lid sliding off when the box is held at an angle.
The construction is the same as our two-piece lid and base boxes, just cut much smaller.
Can a tie box have windows or a handle?
Yes. Our first photo shows black boxes with small clear panels in the side walls, so you can glimpse the tie without opening the lid. One also has an orange ribbon handle looped through the top.
Windows help in a shop, where people want to see the colour before they pick a box up. Clear panels are cut into the board and backed with film.
A ribbon handle turns the box into its own carrier for a wedding or event. For a larger window in the lid, see our window rigid boxes with clear panels.
Should I roll or fold the tie?
It depends on how you sell. Rolling protects silk better; folding fits a slimmer box. This table sets out the trade-off.
| Packing | Box shape | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rolled | Small square box, about 90 mm across | Silk and knitted ties | Needs height of 70 to 80 mm |
| Folded in four | Long, flat box | Posting in a slim parcel | Light creases at each fold |
| Draped on a card | Medium flat box | Shop display | Card must be cut to the tie width |
| Bow tie, pre-tied | Small shallow box | Formal wear and weddings | Wings crush if the lid is too low |
Which insert holds a tie set together?
For a single tie, the box itself is the holder. For a set, you need a tray with sections, or the cufflinks end up under the silk.
A card tray with one raised bar, as in the navy sample, splits the box in two. The tie and pocket square go on one side, the bow tie and cufflinks on the other.
Pocket squares look best folded into a neat strip or a puff, so leave about 15 mm of height above the tray for them. A flat square can tuck under the tie instead.
Cufflinks can sit in two small slits in the card or a foam strip. Other tray layouts are shown under rigid boxes with fitted inserts.
What board, wrap and finish suit a tie box?
A tie box is light, so a standard greyboard is fine, with thickness options on request. Dark wraps suit most neckwear, as both our photos show.
Textured and linen-look papers echo woven silk. Smooth printed wraps suit brands with a pattern of their own.
Finishes are chosen as options. A matt or soft touch laminate keeps dark wraps free of marks, and a foil or debossed logo on a small lid reads well. More detail is in our guide to finishes on rigid boxes.
Are tie boxes good for wedding parties?
They are one of the most common wedding orders we see. Each groomsman gets the same tie or bow tie in a box with his name on a tag or a printed card inside the lid.
Matching sets usually follow the wedding colours, so the wrap or ribbon is chosen to suit. Some couples pair them with our wedding and invitation boxes for a matching look.
Timing matters for weddings. After you sign off the free proof, making takes 4–6 business days. Delivery adds another 2–3, and you still need a few evenings to fill the boxes. Ordering a month ahead leaves room for a second proof if the colours need a tweak.
How do you post tie boxes?
Tie boxes arrive made up, lids on. They are small and light, so a padded or card outer pack is usually enough when you send them on.
Lay the box flat so a rolled tie does not unroll. A narrow band or ribbon around the box holds the lid on for the trip.
For shop sales, tie boxes look good stacked three or four high on a counter. A deeper lid helps here too, as the boxes do not shift when a customer lifts the top one.
If you sell ties with shirts, the tie box can sit inside one of our rigid shirt boxes for a gift set.
What are the common tie box mistakes?
Tie boxes are quick to get right once you know how the tie will sit. These are the slips we see most often on first orders.
- Sizing for a folded tie, then deciding to roll it
- Leaving too little height for a pre-tied bow tie
- Forgetting a slot or strip for the cufflinks
- Choosing a pale wrap that marks easily in a busy shop
- Adding windows but placing them where the tie does not show

Tie and Bow Tie Boxes: questions
How big is a box for a rolled tie?
About 90 x 90 x 80 mm inside suits most rolled silk ties. Thicker knitted ties need a little more height.
Can one box take both a tie and a bow tie?
Yes. A tray with a raised divider keeps them apart, as in our navy sample.
Will a bow tie get crushed in the box?
Not if the box is deep enough for the wings. We size the height to the bow tie as it sits on the table.
Can cufflinks stay in place in a tie box?
Yes. We cut two slits in the card or add a foam strip so each cufflink is held.
Can a tie box have a carry handle?
Yes. A ribbon handle can be fixed through the lid or around the box as an option.
Are the clear windows in tie boxes plastic?
Yes. The panels are a clear film set behind a cut-out in the board.
Can each groomsman's name go on the box?
Yes. We print the box once and you add names on tags or cards, or we print a name card for each box.
Do tie boxes suit knitted ties?
Yes. Knitted ties are thicker, so we add height and usually roll them rather than fold them.
Can I order tie boxes in two sizes with one design?
Yes. A single-tie box and a set box in the same wrap and print are often ordered together.
Is there space for a care card in a tie box?
A small card fits under the tray or inside the lid. Tell us its size and we allow for it.
Which range do branded tie gifts for staff fall under?
Branded staff ties fit our corporate and PR boxes range, but the tie box sizes here work for them too.
Do tie boxes come flat?
No. They arrive made up, lids on, ready for the tie to go in.
