What are lift-off lid boxes?

Lift-off lid boxes are two-piece rigid boxes: a wrapped greyboard base and a matching lid that slides down over it. The lid holds by friction, so it comes away with a slow, steady lift. It is the classic lid and base box used for clothing, shoes, hampers and presentation pieces.

A separate lid lifts straight off the base. A slow lift as air lets the lid go.

How lift-off lid boxes are put together

A separate lid lifts straight off the base. Each one is built from five parts:

  1. Lift-off lid
  2. Printed wrap
  3. Greyboard walls
  4. Insert or tissue bed
  5. Lid depth and fit

What is a lift-off lid box?

It is the simplest rigid box there is: a tray and a lid, both made from wrapped greyboard. The lid is cut a little larger than the base, so it drops over the base walls and sits snugly on top.

That plain build is its strength. There is no hinge or flap to plan around. The whole lid top is free for your logo, and each piece can take any colour.

It is also the easiest rigid box to understand at a glance. Nobody has to work out how it opens, which matters for gifts handed to older relatives or busy clients.

Who chooses lid and base boxes?

Clothing brands use them for shirts, knitwear and shoes. Tech and gadget sellers use them with a fitted insert for a device and its cable. Hamper makers and food gift shops use larger ones that can be refilled.

They also suit presentation work: certificates, awards, invitations and keepsakes. A deep lid over a shallow base gives a formal, boxed feel when it is handed over in person.

How deep should the lid be?

Lid depth changes both the look and the way the box opens. A shallow lid lifts off with no effort. A full-depth lid slides down slowly as air escapes, which feels deliberate and expensive.

Our photos show both. The kraft box and the mint box use part-depth lids, so the base shows below. The orange box has a lid that comes most of the way down, leaving only a thin line of the base.

What size lid and base box fits my item?

Size the base, not the lid. Measure the item and allow a few millimetres of play on length and width, around 3 to 4 mm. Add room on height for tissue or an insert, and we size the lid to slide over the base walls.

For clothing, fold the garment the way you will pack it and measure the folded stack. Shirt sizes vary more than people expect between small and extra large. Our rigid box sizing and clearance guide walks through the full method.

Two parts, two wraps

Because lid and base are separate, they can wear different papers. The mint lid over a black base in our photos is a good example. It looks like one box from above, then shows a second colour when lifted.

Board thickness options are available on request. Wrap choices include printed paper, plain coloured paper, and textured or linen-look papers. A kraft-look plain paper, like the brown box in our photos, keeps a natural feel.

  • Matching lid and base for a clean, single-colour box
  • Contrasting base so the inside colour is a surprise
  • Printed lid with a plain base to keep the focus on the logo
  • A printed pattern inside the lid, on request

Can I add an insert to a lift-off box?

Yes, and this style takes inserts well because the base is fully open from above. The black box in our photos holds a card insert with a long cavity and a separate compartment for a smaller part.

Foam suits devices and glass. Satin-lined inserts suit jewellery or a watch in a larger box. For clothing, most brands skip the insert and use tissue and a sticker seal.

An insert also stops the base walls bowing inwards under a heavy item, which keeps the lid fit even.

Unsure which material to pick? Read how card, foam and satin inserts differ before you send the brief.

Finishes that suit a lift-off lid

The lid top is a large flat panel, ideal for a centred logo. Foil blocking, embossing, debossing and spot UV all sit well on it as options. Soft touch lamination gives the lid a smooth feel and helps a dark colour stay clean.

Keep the sides in mind as well. On a deep lid, the side walls are what people see on a shelf. A small logo on one short side helps when boxes are stacked in a stockroom.

A debossed logo on a kraft-look lid is a quiet choice that still feels considered. Foil on a black lid is louder and photographs well.

Ordering several sizes as a set

The navy boxes in our photos show a graded range in one colour. There is a large flat box, a medium box and a small one, all in the same paper. Brands do this to keep one look from a single item up to a full gift set.

When you order a set, give us each size and we keep the wrap and logo position consistent across them. Graded sizes can also nest for storage when the measurements allow.

Sets are popular with shops that wrap purchases at the till. Staff pick the size that fits, and every bag leaves with the same branded box.

Posting lid and base boxes safely

A shallow lid can lift off in transit. A ribbon tie, a paper belly band or a sticker on two sides keeps it on. On a full-depth lid, friction alone usually holds.

Pack the box inside a plain corrugated shipper with void fill on every face. For clothing, tissue-wrap the garment first so it does not shift and crease. The boxes themselves come to you by free tracked UK delivery from us.

What goes wrong with lift-off boxes?

  • A lid that is too tight, so customers tug and tear the wrap
  • A lid that is too loose, so it rattles and falls off when lifted
  • Measuring the garment flat instead of folded, so the base is too shallow
  • Putting the logo near the lid edge, where fingers rub it every time
  • Skipping a seal on a shallow lid, so it slips off in the parcel

How to order lift-off lid boxes

We need a few details to quote. Every order is quoted in writing, and production starts only after your proof is signed off.

  1. Send the base inside size in millimetres, or tell us what goes inside.
  2. Choose the lid depth: shallow, half or full.
  3. Pick wraps for lid and base, plus any insert and finish options.
  4. Review the free proof from our designers and approve it.
  5. Production takes 4–6 business days, then free tracked UK delivery in 2–3 business days.

Lift-Off Lid Boxes: questions

What is the difference between a lift-off lid and a telescope lid?

They are the same idea. A telescope lid is usually a full-depth lid that slides right down over the base, while shallow lids stop part way.

Can a lift-off box have a lid in one colour and a base in another?

Yes. Each piece has its own wrap, so contrast between them is easy to arrange.

How tight should a lift-off lid be?

Tight enough to stay on when the box is lifted by the lid, loose enough to come off without tearing the wrap. We set the fit from your size and board.

Do lid and base boxes arrive assembled?

Yes. Every box is made up before it leaves us, lid already on, and graded sizes nest where they can.

Can I order lift-off boxes in several sizes?

Yes. Send each size and quantity, and we keep the wrap and logo matched across the set.

Is a lift-off box good for shoes?

Yes, it is the usual shape for rigid shoe boxes. A part-depth lid makes it easy to try shoes on in a shop.

Can the lid have a window?

A window in the lid top is possible. For a clear lid on a gift box, see our clear lid gift boxes, which are designed around it.

Will a shallow lid stay on in the post?

Not always on its own. A ribbon, band or sticker seal holds it, and a snug shipper box helps.

Can you print inside the lid of a lid and base box?

Yes, on request. It is a good place for a pattern or a thank-you line.

Which lid depth looks most premium?

A full-depth lid usually feels the most formal, because it slides down slowly and hides the base.

Can a lift-off box hold a heavy hamper?

With a thicker board option and the right size, yes. Tell us the packed weight and we suggest a board.

What do I send to get a price for lid and base boxes?

The base inside size, lid depth, quantity and your artwork or colour. Our quote form for rigid boxes takes about two minutes.
