What are tuxedo and suit boxes?
Tuxedo and suit boxes are large lift-off lid boxes made for tailored jackets. The base is deep enough for a folded jacket with its lapels and shoulders kept in shape. They are used for gifting, made-to-measure handovers and wedding parties.
A separate lid lifts straight off the base. A slow lift as air lets the lid go.

How tuxedo and suit boxes are put together
A separate lid lifts straight off the base. Each one is built from five parts:
- Lift-off lid
- Printed wrap
- Greyboard walls
- Insert or tissue bed
- Lid depth and fit
What is a tuxedo box?
It is a large, deep rigid box for a tailored jacket. In the UK we often call the garment a dinner suit, but the box is the same either way.
Our photo shows the idea well. A purple lid carries a gold foil frame and corner patterns. Inside, a gold-lined base holds a black velvet dinner jacket folded with a white shirt and a patterned bow tie showing at the neck.
Most of the boxes we make for tailoring are presented by hand, not posted. So the outside matters as much as the fit, because it is often opened in front of a room.
The box sits with our other rigid boxes for fashion labels, but it is the largest garment box we usually make.
Who orders suit and tuxedo boxes?
Mostly people who sell or give tailoring as an occasion, not an everyday buy.
- Tailors handing over a bespoke or made-to-measure suit
- Formalwear shops selling dinner suits for a ball or prom
- Wedding parties giving the groom a boxed jacket on the morning
- Eid and wedding gifting, where a boxed outfit is presented to a family
- Fashion labels sending a hero jacket to a stylist or press
How does the lid come off a suit box?
It is a two-piece box. The lid lifts straight off the base, and the jacket is revealed folded, collar towards you.
On a box this large, the lid needs depth. We usually make it at least half the base height, so it does not twist when you lift it by one side.
A contrast base, like the gold inside the purple box in our photo, shows a band of colour round the jacket. It frames the garment as soon as the lid comes off.
What size box does a dinner jacket need?
Fold the jacket as you would present it: sleeves folded behind, lapels flat, shoulders square. Then measure the folded length, the width across the shoulders and the height at the collar.
Allow 10 mm extra on the length and the width, and 20 mm over the collar. Jackets with padded shoulders need more width than you expect, so measure at the widest point.
Adding a shirt and bow tie on top adds about 10 mm. For a full suit, the trousers fold flat under the jacket. The steps in how to measure for a rigid box apply to clothing too.
Which board and wrap hold a jacket's weight?
A dinner jacket is heavy compared with a shirt, and the base is wide. That calls for a thicker greyboard, which is available on request, so the base does not sag when lifted.
Rich solid colours suit formalwear: deep purple, navy, black or bottle green. Linen-look and textured papers give a cloth-like surface that sits well with tailoring.
Inside the base, a contrast paper is one of the cheapest ways to add drama. Gold, cream or a printed pattern all work.
Dark wraps on a box this size show scuffs at the corners first. A matt laminate over the wrap helps, and so does picking a textured paper rather than a smooth one.
Which finishes suit a formal suit box?
Foil is the natural partner for a dinner suit box. A gold or silver frame, a monogram or a fine border reads as formal straight away.
Every finish is an option you can add: matt or soft touch lamination, foil blocking, embossing and debossing, or spot UV. An embossed monogram under foil gives a raised, metal effect.
Keep the pattern to the lid and leave the walls plain. Our foil and embossing finishes guide shows how fine a foil line can go.
Do suit boxes need inserts?
A folded jacket mostly holds itself, but a few inserts help keep the shape. Choose by what you send with the jacket.
| Insert | Job it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Card shirt board | Keeps the shirt front flat under the lapels | Jacket and shirt sets |
| Shoulder rolls | Soft rolls under each shoulder stop it creasing | Structured or padded jackets |
| Accessory tray | A shallow card tray for cufflinks and a pocket square | Full formal sets |
| Tissue bed | Layers of tissue under and over the jacket | Velvet and fabrics that mark |
Card and foam options are compared in our guide to inserts for rigid boxes.
Are tuxedo boxes used for weddings?
Very often. A groom's jacket in a foiled box makes a good photograph on the wedding morning, and it keeps the jacket pressed until it goes on.
Groomsmen usually get smaller pieces, such as a bow tie or a waistcoat. Matching our tie and bow tie boxes in the same wrap ties the party together.
For Eid and family weddings, a boxed outfit is often part of the gifts. A deep base can hold a folded jacket and a matching accessory side by side.
How do you store and post large suit boxes?
These boxes reach you made up, lids on. They are large, so check you have the shelf space for your quantity before you order.
Where space is short, consider our flat-folding collapsible rigid boxes, which come in garment sizes too.
To post a boxed suit, use a snug double-wall outer carton. Lay the box flat with packing at the corners, and mark the outer carton to keep it flat.
What should you avoid with suit boxes?
Large boxes magnify small sizing errors. A few millimetres that would not matter on a jewellery case can crush a lapel here. These are the slips to check before you send a brief.
- Measuring the jacket on a hanger instead of folded
- Using a thin board for a large base, which then bends in the middle
- A shallow lid that twists off a heavy base
- Packing velvet without tissue, which leaves marks
- Forgetting the bow tie or shirt height when sizing
How do I order tuxedo and suit boxes?
We put every order in writing as a quote, worked out from the jacket size, the board and the finish.
Send your sizes through the suit box quote form, and attach a picture of the jacket folded.
- Fold your largest jacket and measure length, shoulder width and height.
- Tell us what else goes in: shirt, bow tie, trousers or waistcoat.
- Choose the lid colour, the base lining and the foil.
- Review and approve the free proof from our designers.
- We make the boxes in 4–6 business days after approval.
- They reach you free and tracked within 2–3 business days.
Tuxedo and Suit Boxes: questions
Can a tuxedo box hold the trousers as well?
Yes. The trousers fold flat under the jacket, and we add about 20 mm to the box height for them.
Is a tuxedo box big enough for an overcoat?
Usually not. Overcoats are much bulkier, so they need a larger, deeper box made to their folded size.
Will a velvet jacket get marked in the box?
Not if it rests on tissue and the lid has clearance. We size the height so nothing presses on the pile.
Can the inside of the base be a different colour?
Yes. A contrast base or lining, like gold under a purple lid, is a popular choice.
Can you make a matching small box for cufflinks?
Yes. A small hinged or lift-off box in the same wrap can be quoted with the suit boxes.
Do suit boxes have handles?
A ribbon or cord handle can be added as an option for boxes that will be carried.
Are the suit boxes heavy?
They are more solid than a carton, and a thicker board adds weight. Tell us how they will be carried and we suggest a board.
Can a child's suit go in a smaller version?
Yes. Page boy and boy's suits fold smaller, so we cut a smaller box to their size.
Can I have a name foiled on each box?
Every box in a run is printed the same. Names are best added on a printed card or tag inside.
Will the jacket stay folded in the post?
Yes, if the box is sized snugly and laid flat in the outer carton.
Can a waistcoat and tie go in one box?
Yes. A waistcoat folds small, so a medium box with a tray for the tie suits that set.
How long does delivery of large suit boxes take?
They travel free and tracked in 2–3 business days. Our delivery page for UK orders has the details.
