Boxes that match how clothes are folded
Clothing does not come in neat shapes. A shirt folds flat around a board and a tie rolls. A hat needs a round crown, and a suit jacket needs length and width before depth.
That is why this range is mostly lift-off lid boxes, with one drawer and one round box. A lid that comes straight off shows the whole footprint of the garment at once, with tissue folded back like a page.
Labels selling made-to-measure shirts often begin here, with our rigid shirt boxes sized to a folded shirt.
Which apparel box suits which garment?
Every box in the range appears below with its construction and what it holds best.
| Box | Construction | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Rigid Shirt Boxes | Lift-off lid | Folded shirts and knitwear |
| Tie and Bow Tie Boxes | Lift-off lid | Rolled ties, bow ties and pocket squares |
| Tuxedo and Suit Boxes | Lift-off lid | Folded jackets and two-piece suits |
| Hat Boxes | Round tube with a lid | Fedoras, sun hats and caps with a crown |
| Scarf Boxes | Lift-off lid | Folded silk or wool scarves |
| Lingerie Boxes | Sliding drawer | Bras, sets and nightwear |
| Rigid Shoe Boxes | Lift-off lid | Pairs of shoes, trainers and short boots |
Why most apparel boxes use a lift-off lid
A separate lid gives the widest opening of any construction. The garment is seen whole, not peeped at through a flap.
The lid also slows the moment down. It rises a little, air lets it go, and the tissue underneath appears. For a gift or a made-to-order piece, that pause is part of the purchase.
Lift-off boxes also stack well. A run of shirt boxes in one wrap colour makes a tidy wall on a shop shelf or a studio rail.
Lid depth changes the look. A full-depth lid hides the base entirely; a shallow lid shows a band of the base wrap. Ties and pocket squares often suit a shallow lid, as on our tie and bow tie boxes.
Sizing a box to a folded garment
Fold the garment exactly as it will be packed, with tissue, then measure it. Clothes spring up, so press lightly and take the height while someone holds the fold.
Weigh up the size run too. One box made to your largest size fits the smaller sizes with extra tissue, which keeps the order simple. A box sized to the middle of the run will be too tight for the biggest garments.
These inside sizes are common starting points. Your own folded garment sets the final numbers.
Tailoring needs the most space. Our tuxedo and suit boxes for folded jackets explain how the jacket is folded to fit.
- Folded shirt on a board: about 320 x 250 x 60 mm
- Rolled tie: about 110 x 110 x 70 mm
- Folded suit jacket with trousers: about 560 x 380 x 110 mm
- Silk scarf folded square: about 250 x 250 x 40 mm
- Lingerie set laid flat: about 300 x 230 x 60 mm
- Pair of adult shoes: about 330 x 210 x 120 mm
Hat boxes and the round exception
Hats are the one garment that cannot be folded. A brim needs width and a crown needs height, so a round box works better than a square one.
The hat box is a rolled board tube with a lid that slides off. The brim rests on the base, and a card ring can lift the crown so it does not crush.
Caps are the exception within the exception. A structured cap can sit in a square lift-off box with a card former in the crown, which stacks better than a round tube.
Measure the brim across its widest point and the crown height, then add a little room. Our round hat boxes with a slide-off lid list common diameters.
Lingerie, scarves and other soft pieces
Lingerie is the one item here that uses a sliding drawer. The tray slides out of a wrapped sleeve, pulled by a ribbon or tab, and the set lies flat in tissue.
Lingerie is often a gift. A drawer opens neatly in front of someone without a lid to put down, and it behaves well on a shop counter. Our lingerie boxes with a sliding drawer show the pull options.
Soft accessories need a box that stops them sliding about. A silk scarf folded into a square is light, so a shallow box with a snug footprint keeps the folds sharp.
Wool scarves and knitwear are bulkier and spring back. Measure them folded and pressed, then add 5 to 10 mm of depth so the lid closes without squashing the knit.
A printed band or a card wrap around the folded scarf keeps it neat when the lid comes off. It also gives you a second place for the label name.
Wrap colours and finishes for fashion labels
Fashion labels usually keep the outside simple and the inside personal. A black, ivory or stone wrap with a foil or debossed logo is a common starting point.
Textured and linen-look papers suit apparel well, because large lid faces show the grain. Printed patterns can run across the whole lid if your label has a print of its own.
For more texture, ask about a soft touch coat, foil, a raised logo or a spot UV highlight, each one optional. A sticker on the tissue or a printed card inside repeats the logo where it is seen up close.
Apparel boxes are large and often stored for weeks before they are used. Wide lid faces pick up dust, scuffs and fingerprints, especially on pale wraps.
Store them lids on, stacked by size, away from damp walls and direct sun. Keep the delivery cartons, because they protect the boxes far better than open shelving.
If your team packs at a busy bench, a mid-tone or textured wrap hides handling marks. Soft touch lamination feels lovely but shows greasy fingers, so pair it with darker colours.
Shoes need firm walls and room to breathe
A pair of shoes is heavy for its size, and shoe boxes get stacked. They need thicker board than most apparel boxes, and the lid should fit firmly.
Trainers and boots change the sums. A chunky trainer sole adds height, and an ankle boot needs a deeper base or a box laid on its side. Measure the tallest shoe in your size run, not the average one.
Lay the pair heel to toe, as they would sit in the box, then measure. Allow for tissue and any shoe bags. Our rigid shoe boxes for pairs and boots cover boot heights too.
Do apparel boxes work for gifts and occasions?
Yes, and many labels find their rigid boxes sell more gifts. A shirt or scarf in a lift-off box needs no wrapping paper, which buyers like for birthdays, Father's Day and anniversaries.
A short line printed inside the lid turns the same box into a gift box without a second design. So does a card slot for a handwritten note. Wedding parties ordering matching ties or pocket squares often ask for exactly that.
Ordering apparel boxes step by step
Most labels order two or three box sizes at once. These steps keep sizes and finishes consistent.
A designer sets your logo onto a free proof for sign-off. Making the boxes then takes 4–6 business days, and they reach you free, tracked, 2–3 business days later.
- Fold and measure your largest garment in each category.
- Choose a box per category from the table above.
- Pick one wrap, one logo finish and one lid depth across the set.
- Decide whether any box needs an insert, such as a shirt board or crown ring.
- Send those sizes with a rough quantity and your logo, and we price the set in writing.
Common mistakes with clothing boxes
Clothing is soft and forgiving, so mistakes are easy to miss until a full delivery of boxes arrives and the first garment goes in.
- Measuring a garment flat instead of folded, so the box is too shallow once tissue goes in.
- Ordering a box that is too large, so the garment slides and arrives creased.
- Choosing a very pale wrap for boxes stacked in a stockroom, where they mark.
- Posting boxes with no outer carton, so the lid corners are crushed.
Fashion and Apparel Boxes: questions
Which apparel box suits a folded jumper?
The rigid shirt box, made a little deeper. Knitwear needs about 20 mm more depth than a cotton shirt.
Can apparel boxes come with tissue paper?
We make the boxes themselves. Tell us if you plan to add tissue so we allow the depth for it.
What lid depth suits a clothing box?
A full-depth lid looks formal; a shallow lid shows a band of the base wrap. Both are made to your choice.
Can a suit box hold trousers and a jacket together?
Yes. Size it to the folded jacket with the trousers beneath, usually about 110 mm deep.
Is a hat box round or square?
Ours is round: a rolled board tube with a slide-off lid that suits a brim and crown.
Do shoe boxes need thicker board than shirt boxes?
Usually yes. Shoes are heavier and boxes get stacked, so a thicker greyboard keeps the walls firm. Thickness options are available on request.
Can lingerie boxes have a ribbon pull?
Yes. The drawer can be pulled by a ribbon or a tab, chosen at quote stage.
Can my label's print run across the whole lid?
Yes. A printed wrap can carry your pattern over the lid and down the sides.
Can apparel boxes be stacked in a shop window?
Yes. Lift-off boxes stack well, and a firm lid fit keeps them neat on display.
Can I order shirt and tie boxes in the same finish?
Yes. Most labels order a matching set in one wrap and logo finish, quoted together.
How do I measure a garment for a box?
Fold it as it will be packed, with tissue, and measure length, width and height in millimetres. Our article on sizing a rigid box has more detail.
Is a side logo useful on stacked apparel boxes?
Yes. When boxes sit stacked on shelves with the lids hidden, a logo on the side is the part people see.
