What are scarf boxes?

Scarf boxes are shallow two-piece rigid boxes with a lift-off lid. They are cut to a folded scarf, often a silk square, so it lies flat without sliding or creasing. A window in the lid is a popular option for shop display.

A separate lid lifts straight off the base. A slow lift as air lets the lid go.

How scarf boxes are put together

A separate lid lifts straight off the base. Each one is built from five parts:

  1. Lift-off lid
  2. Printed wrap
  3. Greyboard walls
  4. Insert or tissue bed
  5. Lid depth and fit

What are scarf boxes, and who needs them?

A printed silk scarf is a picture you can wear. Folded into a flat box, it can be shown like one. That is what a scarf box does: it holds the scarf flat with the best part of the print on top.

Our first photo shows a cream lid with a copper foil frame of leaves, lifted to reveal a silk scarf in purple and peach. It is simple and very effective.

Scarf boxes sit within our apparel boxes for UK labels, and suit anyone who sells scarves as gifts.

  • Textile designers and print studios selling silk squares
  • Hijab and modest fashion brands
  • Museum and gallery shops selling scarves printed with their collection
  • Knitwear makers boxing a cashmere or wool scarf
  • Corporate teams giving a printed scarf as a staff or client gift

How does the lid open on a scarf box?

It is a two-piece box. Lift the shallow lid away and the folded scarf lies beneath it, print side up.

Scarf boxes are wide and low, so the lid is usually shallow too, about 20 mm. That keeps the box slim enough to slip into a bag or a large letter-sized outer.

This is the same build as our lift-off lid rigid boxes, cut flatter for fabric.

Should a scarf box have a window lid?

Our second photo shows the case for windows. A row of orange boxes each has a square cut-out in the lid, and you can see a different scarf print through each one.

For shops, a window saves opening boxes to show colours. For gifts, a solid lid keeps the surprise. Choose by where most of your scarves are sold.

In that photo, each scarf is also wrapped in clear film with a yellow ribbon. That keeps fingerprints off the silk while it sits behind the window. For full clear lids, see our clear lid gift boxes.

What size box fits a silk square?

Fold the scarf the way you will sell it, usually in four and then four again for a 90 cm square. Measure the folded size and the thickness.

Add about 5 mm to each side so the scarf drops in without forcing. Add 10 mm to the height for tissue or a film wrap. Silk is thin, so most silk boxes end up between 25 and 40 mm deep.

Wool and cashmere scarves fold thicker and need much more height. Hand-rolled silk hems also add a little bulk at the edges, so measure a finished scarf rather than a flat sample. The table gives a starting point.

ScarfHow it is foldedFolded sizeBox depth
90 cm silk squareIn four, then in four againabout 215 mm squareabout 35 mm
70 cm silk squareIn four, then in four againabout 175 mm squareabout 30 mm
Long silk scarfLengthways in three, then foldedabout 295 x 145 mmabout 40 mm
Wool scarfIn half lengthways, then foldedabout 295 x 215 mmabout 70 mm

The full method is in our sizing guide for rigid boxes.

Which board and wrap suit scarf boxes?

Greyboard gives the shape, with thickness options on request. Go for a stiffer grade on large silk boxes, because a broad, low base can flex in the hand.

Plain wraps let the scarf be the colour. Cream, white and soft greys suit printed silk; a bold colour like the orange in our photo turns the box into part of the brand.

Textured and linen-look papers suit wool scarves. They echo the weave and hide small marks from handling.

Inside the base, a contrast paper is a quiet extra. A pale lining under a dark scarf makes the colours stand out the moment the lid comes off.

What finishes work on a scarf box lid?

A scarf box lid is a square canvas, so one well-placed mark goes a long way. Copper foil on cream, as in our photo, looks warm and expensive without any ink.

Each finish is an option: soft touch, matt or gloss laminate, foil, an embossed or debossed mark, and spot UV. A blank foil frame can hold a printed or handwritten name later.

With a window lid, keep the print around the window light. Heavy pattern next to the opening fights with the scarf you are trying to show.

Before you decide, place your logo on a square lid in Design Your Box for scarf lids.

Do scarf boxes need an insert?

Usually not. A folded scarf fills the box, and tissue or a film wrap keeps it clean. Inserts add depth without adding much.

A thin card platform helps when the box is deeper than the scarf. It lifts the scarf to sit just under the lid, which looks better than a scarf at the bottom of a deep tray.

For gift sets, a card divider splits the tray. The scarf goes on one side and a scarf ring or care card on the other.

How do you post a boxed scarf?

Scarf boxes arrive made up with lids on and nest where the sizes allow. They are slim, so a flat card mailer just larger than the box is usually enough to post one.

A paper band or a tied ribbon keeps the lid in place on the way. If the box has a window, keep the film side protected with a sheet of card.

Buyers who want a box to sit next to a scarf often pick one of our round hat boxes for a matching set.

Common mistakes with scarf boxes

Most of these come from measuring a flat scarf rather than a folded one.

  • Sizing for the open scarf instead of the fold you will use
  • Choosing a deep box that lets a thin silk scarf slide about
  • Placing a window over a plain part of the print
  • Picking a lid colour that clashes with half your scarf range
  • Forgetting the extra height of a film wrap or ribbon

How do I order custom scarf boxes?

Every order is quoted in writing. The figure depends on the folded size, any window and the finish.

  1. Fold a scarf as you sell it and measure it.
  2. Decide on a solid lid or a window lid.

Scarf Boxes: questions

What box size fits a 90 cm silk scarf?

About 220 x 220 x 35 mm inside, with the scarf folded in four and then in four again.

Can a scarf box have a see-through lid?

Yes. A window cut into the lid with clear film, or a fully clear lid, are both options.

Will a silk scarf crease in the box?

Only along the folds you choose. A box sized to the fold keeps the scarf from sliding and adding new creases.

Can one box design fit several scarf sizes?

Only if the folded sizes are close. A 70 cm and a 90 cm square usually need two box sizes.

Are scarf boxes deep enough for knitted scarves?

We make them deeper for wool and cashmere, usually around 70 mm. Tell us the folded thickness.

Can I print the scarf pattern on the box?

Yes. A printed wrap can carry a pattern from your scarf, and you see it on the free proof first.

Do scarf boxes fit through a letterbox?

A slim silk box can be thin, but the final size depends on your scarf. Measure the finished box against what your outer packaging allows.

Can a scarf box hold a hijab and pins?

Yes. A card divider or small tray can hold pins next to the folded hijab.

Is the foil frame in your photo a stock design?

No. Foil is made from your own artwork, so the frame, name or pattern is yours.

Can I add a ribbon to a scarf box?

Yes. A ribbon tie round the box or a ribbon pull on the lid can be added as options.

Do you make matching boxes for scarves and gloves?

Yes. A second size for gloves can share the scarf box wrap, and one written quote covers both.

What if a scarf box arrives with a print fault?

Photos sent to us inside 10 days get the boxes reprinted or your money back. The process is on our misprints and refunds policy page.
