What are round gift boxes?
Round gift boxes are rigid drums made from rolled board, wrapped in paper, with a fitted lid that slides over the top by friction. They have no corners to crush and look like a gift before anyone adds ribbon. Diameter, height, wrap and ribbon are all chosen per order.
A round lid slides off a rigid tube or drum. A gentle draw as the lid slides off.

How round gift boxes are put together
A round lid slides off a rigid tube or drum. Each one is built from five parts:
- Round lid
- Printed wrap
- Rolled board tube
- Insert or base disc
- Lid fit on the tube
What is a round gift box?
Think of a short drum with a lid. The body is a tube of rolled board closed with a disc at the base, wrapped in paper inside and out. The lid is a shallower drum that slides down over the top.
Our photos show how much the look can change on the same build: a kraft-look drum tied with cream ribbon, a bright red box with a white bow, a white tube with pink ribbon, striped bases with plain lids, and a set of three pink and burgundy boxes in different sizes.
Who uses round gift boxes?
A round box says gift before the label is read, so it suits sellers whose product is bought as a present. It also has no corners for a parcel to crush, and it fits a round product without the dead space a square box leaves in each corner.
- Candle makers, because a round candle sits neatly in a round box with little wasted space
- Bakers and sweet shops packing biscuits, macarons or truffles in layers
- Bath and body brands selling bath bombs, soaps and small sets
- Florists and gift shops building small arrangements and keepsakes
- Event planners giving thank-you gifts at weddings, birthdays and Eid parties
How does the lid of a round gift box come off?
The lid slides straight up off the drum. There is no hinge or magnet. Friction between the lid wall and the body holds it on, and you feel a gentle draw as it lifts.
That fit is set when the box is made. Too loose and the lid falls off when you pick the box up by its top. Too tight and the lid sticks. We aim for a lid that lifts with one hand while the other holds the base.
The same drum construction is used across several of our pages. Our page on tall rigid tube boxes covers the narrower, taller version.
What diameter round box fits a candle?
Measure the widest point of the candle, including any lip on the vessel, and add 6 to 10 mm. Then measure the height including the lid of the candle, and add 10 mm for tissue or a card disc.
A typical three-wick candle in a glass about 140 mm wide sits well in a box about 150 to 160 mm across. Smaller single-wick candles around 80 mm wide need a box about 90 mm across. Glass is unforgiving: if the box is too wide, the candle knocks against the wall with every step the courier takes, so keep the gap small and add a card disc on the base.
Round items leave less room for error than square ones, and our guide to sizing rigid boxes explains why.
- Measure the widest point of the item in millimetres.
- Measure the height, including any lid or wick.
- Add your clearance to both numbers.
- Send the inside diameter and inside height, and tell us if the item is glass.
Shallow cap or deep lid: which suits a round gift box?
Lid depth changes the whole look. A shallow cap shows most of the base wrap, so a striped or printed body becomes the main design. A deep lid covers most of the drum and reads as one colour. Mid-depth lids sit between the two and give a ribbon tied across the top somewhere to grip.
| Lid depth | Looks | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Shallow cap, about 25 mm | Base wrap is the main design | Striped or patterned bodies |
| Mid cap, about 40 mm | Balanced lid and body | Ribbon tied across the lid |
| Deep lid, most of the height | One solid colour block | Plain wraps with a foil logo |
Wraps, ribbons and bows
The wrap goes on in two pieces, lid and body, so the two can differ. Plain papers, printed patterns such as stripes or florals, and textured or linen-look papers are all options.
Ribbon is where round boxes get their character. A ribbon tied across the lid in a cross, a band wrapped around the lid edge, and a striped pull bow sitting on top are the three styles in our photos. You pick the ribbon shade for each order, to sit with or against the wrap.
Can round gift boxes nest inside each other?
Yes, and it is one of their best features. A set of two or three diameters, each a little smaller than the last, stores inside itself and looks generous on a shop shelf, as the pink and burgundy trio in our photos shows.
Plan a nesting set by working down from the largest box. Sellers often use the largest for a full set, the middle for a pair and the smallest for a single item, so one design covers three price points. Leave about 10 mm between each size so the lids can still go on when the boxes sit inside one another for storage.
Which finishes work on a curved box?
The flat top of the lid takes almost any finish well. Most buyers put a foiled or embossed logo in the middle of it; debossing and spot UV are also possible.
On the curved body, lamination and print work well, but large foil areas and deep embossing are harder to place evenly around a curve. We point out anything risky on your proof. Our article on rigid box finishes and how they work covers each option.
How should round gift boxes be posted?
Round boxes resist crushing well, but they roll and their wrap can rub. Put each box in a square outer carton with paper fill at the four corners, which stops it turning in transit.
If the ribbon is tied, slip a sheet of tissue between the bow and the carton lid. If the lid must stay on for a long journey, a small round sticker across the lid edge holds it without marking the wrap.
Mistakes to avoid with round gift boxes
- Measuring a glass candle without its lip or lid
- Choosing a shallow cap with a plain body, which can look unfinished
- Planning a nesting set without the gap each box needs
- Packing a heavy item without a base disc or insert, so it slides about
- Posting a round box bare, where it rolls and scuffs
How to order round gift boxes
Send the inside diameter, height, quantity and the wrap, lid depth and ribbon you want. For a nesting set, send the largest size and the number of boxes in the set.
A written price comes back first, then a free proof with the lid and body wrap laid out flat. Production is 4–6 business days after approval. To get started, ask for a round gift box price with as much detail as you have.
Round Gift Boxes: questions
Can a round gift box be printed all the way around?
Yes. The body wrap is printed flat and rolled around the drum, so a pattern or stripe runs all the way round. We show where the join falls on the proof.
Where is the seam on a round gift box?
The wrap meets in one vertical line on the body. We place it at the back, away from your logo, unless you ask otherwise.
Can I have a striped base and a plain lid?
Yes. The lid and body are wrapped separately, so mixing a stripe with a plain colour is simple, as several boxes in our photos show.
How many boxes can be in a nesting set?
Two or three is usual. More sizes are possible if the gaps between them allow. Send the largest size and we work out the rest.
Can a round gift box hold layered biscuits or sweets?
Yes. A wide, shallow drum suits layers. Card discs between the layers keep each row in place.
Does the lid of a round box fall off when lifted?
It should not. We set the lid fit so it holds when the box is moved but lifts off with one hand. Very heavy contents should be carried from the base.
Can you make a heart-shaped version of a round gift box?
Shaped drums such as hearts are possible. Our flower box photos show heart-shaped boxes, and the shape is quoted per order.
What ribbon styles are available on round gift boxes?
A tie across the lid, a band around the lid edge, or a pull bow fixed on top, all as options. Ribbon colour is chosen per order.
Can a round gift box have a window?
A round window in the lid is possible. It slightly weakens the lid, so we keep it to smaller boxes.
Do round gift boxes come made up?
Yes. They arrive made up with lids on. Nesting sets arrive nested where that saves space.
Is a round gift box good for a glass candle?
Yes, if it is sized closely. A box about 6 to 10 mm wider than the glass, with a card disc on the base, stops the candle knocking against the wall.
Can round gift boxes be ordered in two sizes on one quote?
Yes. Several diameters can be priced together on one written quote.
