What are wedding and invitation boxes?

Wedding and invitation boxes are rigid two-piece boxes: a base holding the stationery or gift, and a lid that lifts straight off. They turn a printed invitation into something guests keep, and the same build works for bridal party proposals and thank-you gifts. Each one is sized to the card or items it holds.

A separate lid lifts straight off the base. A slow lift as air lets the lid go.

How wedding and invitation boxes are put together

A separate lid lifts straight off the base. Each one is built from five parts:

  1. Lift-off lid
  2. Printed wrap
  3. Greyboard walls
  4. Insert or tissue bed
  5. Lid depth and fit

What are wedding and invitation boxes?

They are slim rigid boxes that hold printed wedding stationery, or slightly deeper boxes that hold small gifts for the wedding party. Both use a base and a separate lid wrapped in paper.

Our photos show four takes: a grey linen-look box with the invitation resting on a raised bed, a navy box tied with a gold satin ribbon, a pale pink bridesmaid box printed with flowers, and a deep green box with a gold foil wreath and a green bow.

Who orders wedding boxes?

The common thread is that the box is opened at home, slowly, and often kept with other wedding keepsakes. Guests tend to hold on to a boxed invitation long after a flat card has gone in a drawer, so it is worth getting the details right.

  • Wedding stationers who offer a boxed invitation as a premium option
  • Couples sending invitations to close family, or to a small guest list
  • Bridal shops and planners building bridesmaid and best man proposal boxes
  • Venues and caterers giving favours or thank-you gifts at each place setting
  • Asian wedding planners sending boxed invitations with sweets for mehndi and walima events

How does a lift-off lid suit wedding stationery?

The lid lifts straight up and away, so the whole invitation is revealed at once, flat in the base. There is no flap folded over the card to crease it and no magnet click to rush the moment.

On a slim invitation box, a full-depth lid is common because it hides the base completely and gives a neat block. Deeper gift boxes often use a part-depth lid so a band of base wrap shows below. That band is a good place for a second colour from the wedding palette.

Some invitation boxes in our photos open on a hinge instead. If you would prefer a box that opens like a book, our book-style rigid boxes page covers that build.

What size box fits a 5x7 inch invitation?

A 5x7 inch card measures about 127 x 178 mm. Add 3 mm on each side so the card lifts out without catching, giving an inside size of about 133 x 184 mm.

Depth depends on what goes in with it, and it is the number most often guessed wrong. A single card needs only 10 to 15 mm. A full suite with an RSVP card, a details card, a ribbon and perhaps a pressed flower or a wax seal needs 25 to 35 mm.

If the box will be posted, check the outer thickness against the parcel size you plan to use before you fix the depth. Our rigid box measuring guide shows how wall thickness adds to the outer size.

Invitation box or gift box: which build do you need?

The two look alike in photos but are planned differently. This comparison helps you brief us correctly.

Wraps, ribbons and colour matching

Most couples want the box to match the wedding palette, and stationers usually work from the same swatches used on the cards. Plain papers in sage, dusty blue, blush, navy, ivory and deep green are common. Textured and linen-look wraps give the soft, woven surface many stationers prefer.

Ribbon ties are options in satin or grosgrain, fixed under the base so they stay with the box, in a shade chosen to match the wrap. Tell us the colour reference your stationer is using and we match the wrap and ribbon as closely as the papers allow, then show both on the proof.

Which finishes suit a wedding box?

Gold or rose gold foil blocking, chosen as an option, is the classic choice for a monogram, the couple's initials or a wreath like the one in our green box photo. Blind debossing gives a quieter mark pressed into linen-look paper.

Printed florals work well on smooth paper with matt lamination, as on the pink bridesmaid box. A short printed line on the lid, such as a proposal question for a bridesmaid, reads well in a simple script. All finishes are options and show on your proof. Our article on foil, debossing and other finishes explains each one.

How do I plan wedding boxes in time?

Invitations usually go out several months before the day, so work backwards from your posting date. Assembling a suite by hand, with ribbon, seal and inserts, takes longer than most people expect, so leave a weekend for it.

  1. Get the final card size from your stationer before ordering boxes.
  2. Send us the card size, depth of the full suite and the number of boxes.
  3. Approve the free design proof, checking names and dates carefully.
  4. Allow 4–6 business days of production after approval.
  5. Allow 2–3 business days for free tracked UK delivery, then time to assemble each suite.

Can you post a boxed wedding invitation?

Yes, but not bare. Put the box inside a padded envelope or a slim plain carton, and put the address on that outer layer. Ribbon bows crush in a flat envelope, so tie the ribbon flat or use a pull tab on boxes that will be posted.

Many couples hand deliver boxed invitations to close family and post simpler cards to everyone else. That keeps the number of boxes, and the postage, down. If every guest gets a box, post a test one to yourself first and see how it arrives.

Mistakes couples and stationers make

  • Ordering boxes before the card size is final
  • Forgetting the depth of a wax seal, ribbon or pressed flower
  • Putting the wedding date on the box and then changing it
  • Choosing a bulky bow for boxes that will be posted
  • Leaving no spare boxes for late additions to the guest list

Ordering wedding and invitation boxes

Send the inside size, quantity, wrap colour and any ribbon or foil. Every order is quoted in writing.

Our designers place your monogram or artwork for free, and the proof shows the lid, the base and any printed inside panel. Read it twice, and ask someone else to check every name and date. Stationers who supply many couples can get a quote for invitation boxes once and reuse the same size with a new wrap and foil each time.

Wedding and Invitation Boxes: questions

Can a wedding box hold the whole invitation suite?

Yes. Send the size of the largest card and the total thickness of the suite, and we size the box to hold everything flat.

Can the couple's initials be foiled on the invitation box lid?

Yes. Most couples choose foil for this, often a monogram or a small wreath around two letters.

What is a raised card bed in an invitation box?

It is a wrapped board platform inside the base that lifts the invitation close to the rim, so the card is the first thing seen on opening. The grey box in our photos has one.

Can wedding boxes match our wedding colours?

We match the wrap and ribbon to your colour reference as closely as the available papers allow and show the result on the proof.

Do invitation boxes need a ribbon?

No. A ribbon tie is an option. Boxes that will be posted often skip the bow or use a flat tie.

Can each guest's name be printed on their box?

Names on each box need a separate print version per guest, which changes the price. Many couples add a printed name card inside instead.

Can I order bridesmaid proposal boxes and invitation boxes together?

Yes. Different sizes can be priced on one written quote with matching wraps.

How deep should a wedding favour box be?

Set it by the tallest favour plus about 10 mm. Sweets, a small candle or a miniature bottle usually need 40 to 70 mm.

Can a wedding box have a window to show the invitation?

A window in the lid is possible on a lift-off lid. It suits thicker, heavier invitations that will not bow under it.

Do you make boxes for mehndi, nikah and walima invitations?

Yes. The construction is the same, and the wrap, foil and inside can be designed to match each event.

Can a stationer reorder the same wedding box size for different couples?

Yes. Keep the size and change the wrap, ribbon and foil for each couple. Each order goes through a fresh proof.

What happens if a name is misspelt on a wedding box?

Check names and dates carefully on the proof. If a misprint does reach you, report it within 10 days with photos for a reprint or refund under our misprint and damage policy.
