What are jewellery boxes?

Jewellery boxes are small rigid boxes made to hold rings, chains, earrings or bracelets, usually with a padded pad or slotted insert inside. Ours use a magnetic flap: the lid lifts on a spine and the front flap holds shut with magnets hidden under the wrap. Each one is sized to your pieces in millimetres.

How jewellery boxes are put together

The lid lifts on a spine and a front flap holds shut with hidden magnets. Each one is built from five parts:

  1. Lid and spine
  2. Printed wrap
  3. Greyboard walls
  4. Insert or tissue bed
  5. Flap with hidden magnets

What makes a good jewellery box?

A jewellery box has to hold something small and valuable so it cannot move, then open in a way that feels like a moment. Size, insert and closure all serve those two jobs.

Our version is a wrapped greyboard box with a magnetic flap. It is light enough to post in a padded envelope, yet stiff enough that it does not crush in a handbag.

Who buys custom jewellery boxes?

Most start with one box that fits most of their range, then add sizes as the range grows. The jewellery and watch box range shows the specialist styles in one place.

Online sellers often start with a size that fits a padded envelope, then add a larger set box for gift bundles.

  • Independent jewellers boxing every sale at the counter
  • Makers selling silver and gold-plated pieces online
  • Bridal shops packing gifts for bridesmaids
  • Engraving and personalisation businesses
  • Gift brands bundling a piece with a printed card

How does the magnetic flap open?

The lid is one piece with the base, joined along the back by a wrapped spine. A flap at the front of the lid folds down over the base, and two small magnets under the wrap pull it shut.

You lift the flap with a thumb and the lid swings up. The pink and black boxes in our photos show it: the lid stands open behind the piece, like a backdrop.

There is no ribbon to tie and no lid to put down. That suits a counter where staff box several sales an hour. Our magnetic closure boxes in larger sizes use the same hinge and flap.

The magnets sit under the wrap, so nothing metal shows on the outside of the box.

What size box does a ring, chain or bracelet need?

Measure the piece as it will sit in the box, not as it is worn. A 45 cm chain laid in a loop on a pad takes up about 70 mm, while a cuff needs its full width and height.

Allow 3 to 5 mm of pad round the piece on every side, and 5 mm above the tallest point, such as a stone setting or a bail.

If one box needs to cover several pieces, size it for the largest and use the insert to hold the smaller ones. Our sizes table below gives starting points.

Which insert holds jewellery best?

Pads come in plain card, velvet-look or satin-lined finishes on request. Our black and green photos show the dark velvet-look pad that makes gold and silver stand out.

Ring slots should grip the band firmly. Too loose and the ring tips forward. Too tight and the buyer struggles to pull it free.

InsertHoldsHow it works
Flat padded padChains, pendants, braceletsPiece lies on the pad, chain tucked behind it
Slotted padRings and studsA slit grips the band or the earring posts
Card with tabsNecklacesChain hooks round two tabs to keep it flat
Satin-lined cavityCuffs and banglesA shaped well holds the curve

Board and wrap for small boxes

Small boxes show every flaw, so the wrap matters. Smooth papers give crisp corners on a box only 50 mm wide. Textured and linen-look wraps feel richer in the hand.

Greyboard thickness is chosen to the size, with options on request. A ring box can use a thinner board than a set box, which keeps the walls neat.

Colour is the easiest way to own a box. The pink in our first photo, wrapped inside and out, needs no logo to be recognised.

If you are torn between two colours, ask for both on the proof and compare them on screen first.

Logos and finishes on jewellery boxes

Small lids suit small logos. A 20 to 30 mm foil blocked mark in the centre of the lid is the usual choice, with the shop name repeated inside the flap.

Other options include embossing, debossing, spot UV, and a laminate in soft touch, matt or gloss. Soft touch on a dark wrap with silver foil reads as quiet and expensive.

Our designers place the artwork for free. To compare finishes side by side, read our notes on rigid box finishes.

Keeping the piece safe in the post

Most jewellery boxes travel inside a padded envelope or a small shipper. The magnetic flap stays closed by itself, so the box does not open in transit.

For a chain, hook it round tabs or tuck the end behind the pad. Loose chains tangle and slide to one corner when the parcel is turned over.

A box sized to the piece, rather than a large box with lots of space, is the best protection you can give it.

Rings are the exception that needs a firm slot. A ring that drops out of a loose slit rattles round the box and can scratch against the magnet flap.

Can one look cover your whole jewellery range?

Yes, and it is worth planning early. Keep the same wrap, pad colour and logo position across every size, and a ring box and a necklace box will read as one family.

The construction can change with the piece while the look stays the same. Rings and studs suit this magnetic flap, chains often suit a flatter hinged case, and earrings slide nicely into a drawer.

Our hinged necklace boxes with chain tabs are built to sit alongside these as a matching set.

Order the sizes together if you can. One proof then shows every box side by side, so colours and logo sizes match before anything is made.

Mistakes jewellers make with boxes

  • Ordering one huge box size to cover rings and necklaces alike
  • Leaving chains loose, so they arrive tangled
  • A logo too large for a 50 mm lid
  • Choosing a pale pad for pale metals, which hides the piece
  • Forgetting to allow height for a raised stone setting

How to order jewellery boxes

Questions about a size before you ask for a price? Our guide to sizing a rigid box covers clearance and insert height.

  1. List the pieces the box must hold, with their sizes in millimetres.
  2. Choose the pad or insert and the wrap colour.
  3. Send your logo, or upload it to Design Your Box to see it on a lid.
  4. We reply with a written price, then a free proof.
  5. After approval, boxes are made in 4–6 business days.
  6. Free tracked delivery to your UK address takes 2–3 business days.

Jewellery Boxes: questions

Do jewellery boxes come with a pad inside?

Yes, if you want one. A flat padded pad, a slotted pad for rings and studs, or a card with tabs for chains can be made to the box size.

Can one jewellery box size fit rings and pendants?

Often, yes. A box about 70 to 90 mm square with a slotted pad holds a ring or a small pendant. Larger necklaces need their own size.

Is a magnetic flap secure enough for posting?

Yes. The magnets keep the flap shut in a padded envelope or shipper. For extra hold, a ribbon or a paper band can go round the box.

Can the jewellery box be lined in a different colour?

Yes. The inside can be wrapped or printed in a contrast colour, and the pad can match or contrast with it.

What pad colour suits gold jewellery?

Dark pads such as black, deep green or navy make gold stand out. Our green box photo shows a gold cuff on a dark pad.

What pad colour suits silver jewellery?

Black, grey and deep blue all work well with silver. Very pale pads can make silver look washed out.

Can you foil a logo inside the flap?

Yes. Inside print and foil are options, and the inside of the flap is a good spot for a shop name or care line.

How small can a jewellery box be made?

A single ring box is usually about 50 mm square inside. Smaller sizes are possible; send the piece size and we check it on the proof.

Do jewellery boxes arrive ready to use?

Yes. They arrive made up, with the pad or insert fitted if you ordered one.

Can I order different colours of the same box?

Yes. Give us the split between colours with your request, and the proof shows each version.

Are jewellery boxes suitable for engraved gifts?

Yes. Engravers often box each piece with a card in the lid. A lid message printed inside is also an option.

Do you deliver jewellery boxes to shops across the UK?

Yes. Every UK order travels free with tracking and lands in 2–3 business days. Our office is in Wolverhampton, and you can get in touch with our team by phone, email or WhatsApp.
