What are book-style rigid boxes?

Book-style rigid boxes are wrapped greyboard cases with a front cover joined along one long side by a spine. The cover swings open to show a tray or cavity inside. They are made up in full and often carry a printed message on the inside of the cover.

The cover swings open from a side spine, like a hardback. Opens like a book, often with a message inside the cover.

How book-style rigid boxes are put together

The cover swings open from a side spine, like a hardback. Each one is built from five parts:

  1. Front cover
  2. Printed wrap
  3. Greyboard case and tray
  4. Insert or cavity
  5. Spine and cover catch

What are book-style boxes used for?

Anything that tells a story suits this box. PR agencies use it for launch kits, with a letter inside the cover and products in the tray. Photographers use it for prints. Wedding planners use it for invitations and favours.

It also stands upright on a shelf like a book, spine out. That is why brands use it for editions and collectables, where the box itself is part of what people keep.

For send-outs planned around a launch date, our PR box send-out planning guide works back from the day the boxes must land.

How does a book-style box open?

The cover is joined to the case along one long edge by a wrapped spine. You lift the front edge and the cover swings over to the left, just like opening a hardback.

When it closes, the cover sits flat over the tray. A ribbon tie or a cover catch keeps it shut, as you choose. The purple box in our photos uses a yellow ribbon pull at the top so the cover is easy to lift.

The spine width matches the case depth, so the cover lies flat when closed and does not spring up at the front edge.

Which layout suits my product?

Book boxes come in more layouts than people expect. Our photos show five of them, and the table explains what each one is good at.

LayoutWhat you see on openingGood for
Single tray under the coverOne open compartmentGifts, prints, folded textiles
Foam cavity trayProduct cut into foam, like the grey boxElectronics, keys, glass
Cover with a card or message panelPrinted panel inside the coverInvitations, launch letters
Two trays side by sideTwo compartments, one each sideKits with a main item and accessories
Double-opening frontTwo panels opening from the centreLarge reveals and premium sets

How do I size a book-style box?

Size the tray first. Measure the product, or the product in its insert, and add a few millimetres all round. The case is then built around the tray, and the cover is cut slightly larger so it overhangs cleanly.

Depth is the number to watch. A slim book box of 25 to 40 mm feels elegant. Go much deeper and it starts to look like a case rather than a book, which may or may not be what you want.

Think about how the box will be shown. A box handed over on a table can be deeper. A box posted to a desk looks smarter slim.

Board, wrap and that book-like look

The case and cover are greyboard, with thickness options on request. Wrap papers can be printed with your artwork, plain coloured, or textured and linen-look.

Look at the grey box on yellow in our photos. Its sides are wrapped in a cream paper printed with fine lines, so it reads as the page edges of a real book. It is a simple trick, and it always gets noticed.

The navy case in our photos pairs a dark outer wrap with a bright orange tray and lining. Open it and the colour does the talking before the product is even seen.

  • Page-edge print on the three open sides
  • A title or logo printed or foiled on the spine
  • Contrasting colour inside the cover, like a book endpaper
  • Linen-look wrap for a cloth-bound feel

Inserts inside a book box

Foam is the common choice for flat, hard items such as cards, drives, pens or small instruments. It holds each piece in a cut cavity and stops it sliding when the box stands on its spine.

Card inserts suit printed matter and lighter products. A satin-lined bed suits jewellery or a watch. Where the box will stand upright, tell us, because every insert then needs to grip harder.

What can I print inside the cover?

The inside cover is the first thing anyone reads. Brands put a welcome note, a launch message, care instructions or simply a large logo there. The purple box in our photos carries a printed greeting on a card panel set into the tray.

On the outside, the cover and spine can take foil, a raised or pressed logo, or spot UV, all as options. Soft touch lamination suits a dark cover that will be handled at a reveal.

Some clients want a different message for each recipient. Tell us at the brief stage and we explain the options for printing names inside.

See how foil and embossing look on rigid boxes before you settle on a cover finish.

Why do people keep book boxes?

They store like books. A box that fits on a shelf next to real books does not get thrown out. People use them for letters, photos and small treasures.

That shelf life is worth designing for. A clear spine title means the box can be found again. Your name is seen each time someone runs a finger along the shelf.

How should I post a book-style box?

Close the cover with its tie or catch, then add a paper band if the box will travel far. Lay it flat in a corrugated shipper with a thin layer of fill above and below.

Avoid packing it on its spine in transit. The cover is the largest flat panel, and a drop on the spine edge can push it out of line.

Book box mistakes we often see

Most of these come down to the cover. It is the part people touch and read first, so small errors there show most.

  • Sizing the case to the product but forgetting the cover overhang
  • Leaving the inside cover blank on a PR kit, wasting the best panel
  • Using loose card inserts in a box that will stand on its spine
  • Placing artwork across the spine fold, so a line runs through it

Book-Style Rigid Boxes: questions

How does a book-style box stay closed?

A ribbon tie or a cover catch holds the cover over the tray. We show the closure you choose on the proof.

Can a book box stand upright on a shelf?

Yes, it stands on its spine like a book. Use a gripping insert if products stay inside while it stands.

Can you print on the spine of a book-style box?

Yes. A printed or foiled title on the spine is a popular option.

Can the inside cover hold a letter?

A card pocket inside the cover can be added on request. It holds a letter, voucher or care card.

What is a double-opening book box?

Two cover panels meet in the middle and open outwards. It gives a wide reveal for larger sets.

Are book-style boxes good for influencer kits?

They are one of the most used shapes for this. The inside cover carries the message and the tray holds the products.

Can a book box have two compartments?

Yes. Two trays side by side, or a tray with a divider, can be made to your items.

Do book-style boxes arrive flat?

No. They arrive fully made up, ready to fill.

How thin can a book-style box be?

We size to the product, and slim cases around 25 mm inside depth are common for cards and drives.

Can the box look like a real book?

Yes. Page-edge printing on the sides and a spine title give a real book look.

Which insert stops items moving in a book box?

Foam with cut cavities grips best, especially when the box stands on its spine.

Can I order book boxes for a dated launch?

Yes. Tell us the date the boxes must land. Count back from it: a few days for the proof, 4–6 business days to make them, then 2–3 business days on the road. Our PR boxes for launches and seeding page has more on timing.
