Necklace boxes are quoted in writing to the chain length, pad, wrap and finish.

What are necklace boxes?

Necklace boxes are shallow rigid cases sized so a chain lies flat in a loop with the pendant facing up. Ours have a hinged lid joined along the back, so the case opens like a book laid flat and stays in one piece. A pad with tabs or a slit holds the chain in place.

The lid is joined at the back and lifts like a case. Feels like a keepsake case rather than a carton.

How necklace boxes are put together

The lid is joined at the back and lifts like a case. Each one is built from five parts:

  1. Hinged lid
  2. Printed wrap
  3. Greyboard walls
  4. Insert or cavity
  5. Hinge along the back

What is a necklace box?

It is a shallow case built for one problem: a chain. Left loose, a chain knots, slides and hides the pendant. A necklace box gives it a fixed path so it arrives looking the way it did on the counter.

The case is wrapped greyboard with a hinged lid. Inside sits a pad, usually dark, with a way to hook or slot the chain at the top.

Fine chains are the hardest pieces to present, because they have no shape of their own. The pad gives them one.

How does the hinged lid suit a necklace?

A wrapped hinge runs along the back edge and ties the lid to the base. It lifts like a case and stands upright, as the navy box in our first photo shows.

Nothing comes apart, so the pad is never knocked when someone puts a loose lid down. The lid rests closed on its own, and you can add a magnet or ribbon stay for a firmer hold.

A shallow case also stacks well in a drawer or a display cabinet. For the same construction in other sizes, see our range of hinged lid rigid boxes.

What size box fits a 45 cm necklace?

Lay the chain on a table in a loop with the clasp at the top and the pendant at the bottom. A 45 cm chain makes a loop roughly 70 mm across.

Add the pendant and 5 mm of margin each side, and a box about 80 to 90 mm square works for most fine pieces. Long chains of 60 cm or more fit better folded into a larger box about 160 mm square.

Height is set by the pendant. Add 5 mm above the deepest part, such as a stone or a locket, for the inside depth.

How is the chain held in place?

Our fourth photo shows a grey pad with a hook at the top and the pendant hanging below. Our page on choosing a pad or insert compares card, foam and satin.

  1. The chain is draped behind the pad or round two card tabs at the top.
  2. The clasp tucks into a slit so it sits out of sight.
  3. The pendant hangs at the centre of the pad, facing up.
  4. A clear tag or small tie can hold the pendant flat on long drops.
  5. The lid closes over a shallow gap so nothing presses on the stone.

Who orders necklace boxes?

Many pair the necklace box with a smaller box for rings or studs in the same wrap.

Personalised pieces sell on the detail, so the box should show the name or initial straight away, not hide it under a fold of tissue.

  • Jewellers selling pendants, lockets and birthstone chains
  • Makers of name and initial necklaces sold online
  • Bridal shops giving matching necklaces to bridesmaids
  • Gift shops selling a necklace and earring set together
  • Engravers who need the engraved face showing when the lid lifts

Can a necklace box hold a full set?

Yes. Our third photo shows a blue case with angled corners holding a pendant, a pair of studs and a ring on one pad.

For a set, the pad gets a slot for the ring, two holes or a slit for the earring posts, and tabs for the chain. The box is sized for the widest arrangement, usually about 150 x 120 mm.

Our second photo shows the same idea in a green textured box, with earrings and a small piece side by side on a black pad.

Keep the ring slot low on the pad and the chain tabs high, so the pendant hangs between them without touching.

Wrap, colour and pad

Greyboard forms the case, with thickness options on request. Printed or plain paper covers it, with textured and linen-look wraps as options.

Pad colour does a lot of work on a necklace box. Black, navy and deep grey make fine chains visible. A cream or white pad suits dark stones and coloured enamel.

Our pale blue photo shows another route: a soft outer colour with a grey ribbon, and a darker pad inside for contrast.

If your pieces vary, pick the pad colour that suits most of them and keep it the same on every box.

Hinged case, magnetic flap or drawer for a necklace?

All three can hold a chain. They differ in depth, in how they open and in how the piece is first seen.

StyleOpensDepthGood for
Hinged caseLid lifts on a back hingeShallow, 25 to 30 mmPendants shown flat, counter sales
Magnetic flapFront flap clicks shutMedium, 30 to 40 mmGift boxing, mixed pieces
Sliding drawerTray slides from a sleeveShallow to mediumOnline orders, a slow reveal

A drawer suits fine chains packed for the post. Our sliding drawer earring boxes show how the tray and pull work at this size.

For most shops the hinged case wins, because it opens with the piece already facing the customer.

Logo and finish on a shallow lid

A necklace box lid is wide and flat, so a centred foil logo sits well. Embossing or debossing gives texture without colour.

Spot UV and foil can be added, over a soft touch, matt or gloss laminated wrap. Our designers place the artwork for free on your proof.

The inside of the lid can carry your name or a short care note, which the buyer sees every time they open it.

Keep the logo away from the front edge, where thumbs lift the lid and wear the finish first.

Necklace box mistakes to avoid

A necklace box works best as part of a matching family. Our jewellery and watch boxes range shows the sizes that sit alongside it.

  • A box too small for the chain, so it bunches under the pendant
  • No tabs or slit, leaving the chain loose
  • Too little depth for a locket or a raised stone
  • A pale pad that hides a fine silver chain

How to order necklace boxes

Tell us the chain length, the pendant size, the pad you want and how many boxes. We send a written price for the order.

A free proof follows, with the pad layout shown. Production runs 4–6 business days from approval, and free tracked UK delivery then takes 2–3 business days.

To share the details, use the form for a written box quote, or send a photo of the piece on WhatsApp.

Most shops manage with two necklace box sizes: one for chains up to 50 cm and a larger one for long or layered pieces.

Necklace Boxes: questions

What size box do I need for an 18 inch necklace?

An 18 inch chain is about 45 cm. A box about 80 to 90 mm square holds it in a loop with a small pendant.

How do you stop a necklace chain tangling in the box?

The chain hooks round tabs or slides behind the pad, and the clasp tucks into a slit. That keeps it in a fixed loop.

Can a necklace box have a satin pad?

Yes. Satin-lined pads are an option, as are velvet-look and plain card pads.

Will a long 60 cm chain fit a standard necklace box?

Long chains need a larger box, about 160 mm square, or a chain folded behind a narrower pad.

Does the hinged lid stay open on its own?

Yes. The wrapped hinge lets the lid stand upright behind the pad, which is how most shops show the piece.

Can a necklace box hold earrings as well?

Yes. The pad can carry two small holes or a slit for earring posts beside the chain.

Can the lid of a necklace box be magnetic?

A magnet stay is an option on a hinged lid. For a full front flap, see our magnetic flap jewellery boxes.

Can the pad carry my logo?

Yes. A small foil or printed logo on the pad shows above the pendant when the lid opens.

How deep should a necklace box be?

Most are 25 to 30 mm deep inside. Add 5 mm above the deepest part of the pendant, such as a stone or locket.

Can the box corners be angled like in the photo?

Tell us if you want angled corners. Shaped cases are quoted per order, and the shape is drawn on your proof.

Do necklace boxes come with the pad fitted?

Yes. They arrive made up with the pad in place, ready for the piece.

Can I tie a ribbon round a necklace box?

Yes. Ribbon ties are an option, like the grey ribbon on the pale blue box in our photos.
