What are hexagon rigid boxes?

Hexagon rigid boxes are six-sided greyboard boxes with a separate lid that lifts off the base. All six walls are wrapped in paper, so the corners stay crisp and the box holds its shape. We size them in millimetres across the flats to whatever goes inside.

A separate lid lifts straight off the base. A slow lift as air lets the lid go.

How hexagon rigid boxes are put together

A separate lid lifts straight off the base. Each one is built from five parts:

  1. Lift-off lid
  2. Printed wrap
  3. Greyboard walls
  4. Insert or tissue bed
  5. Lid depth and fit

What is a hexagon rigid box?

It is a two-piece box with six equal walls. The base is built from greyboard panels joined at 120 degree corners, then wrapped in paper. A lid of the same shape sits over the top.

The shape does most of the work. A hexagon on a shelf or a table looks deliberate in a way a square box rarely does, and it gives you six faces to print on instead of four.

Inside, the base can be lined in plain paper or a contrast colour. The lid can be full depth, covering the base to the table, or a shallow cap that shows a band of the base wall.

Who orders six-sided boxes?

Most buyers want a gift that stands out on a counter or in a photo. The shape also suits sets of three or six, because the inside divides neatly into wedges or diamonds.

Hexagons also photograph well from above, which helps sellers whose customers find them through an online shop or social posts.

If you are still choosing a shape, the full range of rigid box styles sets the hexagon beside drawers, shoulders and tubes.

  • Candle makers boxing a single round jar or a trio of votives
  • Wedding planners ordering favour boxes for each table setting
  • Subscription brands that want a box people keep on a dressing table
  • Stationery and card makers sending a mixed set with a note on top
  • Beauty sellers packing a bath set around a central bottle

How does the lid come off a six-sided box?

The lid is a slightly larger hexagon with six short walls. It slides down over the base and is held by friction on all six sides at once. You lift it straight up to open.

Because there are six contact faces, the fit has to be even. One tight wall makes the lid rock or jam. We cut lid and base as a matched pair so the gap stays the same on every side.

It is the same principle as our square and oblong lift-off lid boxes, with two extra corners to wrap.

How do you measure for a hexagon box?

A hexagon has two widths. Across the flats runs from one wall to the opposite wall. Across the corners runs from point to point and is about 15% longer. We work from the flats.

Our guide on measuring products for a rigid box covers clearance in more detail.

  1. Stand the item on paper and mark its widest point in millimetres.
  2. Add about 4 mm so it lifts out without catching on a wall.
  3. Treat that figure as the inside size across the flats.
  4. Measure the tallest point, including any lid, wick or ribbon, and add 3 to 5 mm for depth.
  5. Send both numbers, or post us a sample, and we check the fit on the proof.

Board and wrap on a six-sided box

All six walls are cut from greyboard, in a thickness picked to suit the size. Bigger hexagons need thicker board, because six joins give the base more places to flex.

Every corner is wrapped by hand, so the paper choice shows. Smooth printed paper gives sharp, clean points. Textured or linen-look papers, like the orange lid in our second photo, hide small marks from handling.

A contrast lining is a simple win. The white box in our first photo opens onto a yellow interior, and that flash of colour is what people remember.

Can a hexagon box have a divided insert?

Yes. Our third photo shows a hexagon tray split into four sections: a large wedge for a card and three diamonds for small items. Dividers can also run from the centre to each corner to make six equal wedges.

Card dividers suit flat or boxed items. Foam suits glass, and satin-lined inserts suit jewellery or keepsakes. Each one is made to the pieces you send.

For the trade-offs between materials, read our comparison of card, foam and satin inserts.

Which finishes suit a hexagon lid?

The lid top is the main face, so keep artwork centred. A logo near a corner can look lopsided once the box turns on a shelf.

You can add foil blocking, a raised emboss or pressed deboss, spot UV, or a soft touch, matt or gloss laminate. A foil band across the lid, like the gold band in our second photo, reads well from any angle.

Our designers place your artwork for free and send a proof showing all six side panels. The guide to finishes for rigid boxes explains where each finish works best.

Hexagon, round or square?

The three shapes feel different in the hand and pack differently in a shipper. This is how they compare for a small gift.

ShapeHow it looksPacking in a shipperInside layout
HexagonDistinct, with six faces to printLeaves gaps at the cornersWedges, diamonds or one open well
Round tubeSoft and traditionalLeaves gaps all roundOne central item or a stack
Square lift-offClassic and familiarFills a carton with no gapsGrid of equal cells

For a cylinder rather than six flat faces, see our round rigid tube boxes.

Posting hexagon boxes without damage

Corners are the weak point in transit. A hexagon sitting in a square shipper has four empty triangles around it, and a knock lands straight on a point.

Fill those gaps with paper or a card collar so the box cannot slide. For a single box, a shipper about 20 mm larger than the box across the corners works well.

Lids should not be taped down, as tape lifts the wrap. A paper band or a ribbon around the whole box keeps the lid on and opens cleanly.

On a large run, ask how the boxes will arrive. Hexagons of two sizes can often nest inside each other, which saves shelf space until you fill them.

Mistakes to avoid on a hexagon order

Each of these shows up on the proof, so ask us if a measurement looks odd before you approve it.

  • Giving the size across the corners when you meant across the flats
  • Forgetting the height of a candle lid, wick or ribbon
  • Placing a logo on a corner fold, where the wrap bends
  • Choosing very thin board for a large box
  • Packing a hexagon loose in a square carton with no filler

Hexagon Rigid Boxes: questions

What does across the flats mean on a hexagon box?

It is the distance from one flat wall to the wall directly opposite. We size hexagon boxes this way because it is the width your product actually has to fit.

How much bigger is a hexagon across the corners?

About 15% bigger than across the flats. A box 100 mm across the flats is roughly 115 mm point to point, which matters when you pick a shipper.

Can the hexagon lid be shallow instead of full depth?

Yes. A full-depth lid reaches the table and hides the base. A shallow cap about 25 mm deep shows the base wall, which suits a two-colour design.

Will a hexagon box hold a round candle jar?

Yes, and it is a common use. We size the box across the flats to the jar's diameter plus a few millimetres, and a card ring can stop it sliding.

Can the inside of a hexagon box be split into six?

Yes. Card dividers can run from the centre to each corner to make six wedges, or the tray can split into diamonds like our third photo.

Is the inside of a hexagon box printed?

It can be. A plain or printed lining is an option, and a contrast colour inside the lid and base is a popular choice.

Do hexagon boxes arrive assembled?

Yes. They arrive made up with the lids on, and smaller sizes can sometimes nest inside larger ones to save space.

Can I tie a ribbon around a hexagon box?

Yes. Ribbon ties and ribbon pulls are options. A ribbon round the middle also holds the lid on during delivery.

Are hexagon boxes harder to make than square ones?

They take more hand work, because there are six wrapped corners instead of four. That is reflected in the written quote for your order.

Can each hexagon box in an order carry a different name?

Mention it when you request a price. Changes in artwork across one run are quoted per order, and we show each version on the proof.

Which wedding favours fit a small hexagon box?

Small sweets in a sealed bag, a mini candle, a seed packet or a folded card all fit. A box about 80 to 120 mm across the flats covers most of them.

Can I try a logo on the lid before asking for a price?

Yes. Upload it in Design Your Box on our site to see it on a box, then send it to us with your sizes.
