What are watch boxes?
Watch boxes are small, deep rigid boxes with a removable pillow that the strap wraps around. The pillow keeps the watch the right way up and shows the dial as soon as the lid comes off. Each box is made to the watch case size and strap length.
A separate lid lifts straight off the base. A slow lift as air lets the lid go.

How watch boxes are put together
A separate lid lifts straight off the base. Each one is built from five parts:
- Lift-off lid
- Printed wrap
- Greyboard walls
- Insert or tissue bed
- Lid depth and fit
What are watch boxes for, and who buys them?
A watch needs to be shown done up, with the dial facing up and the strap curved as if on a wrist. A flat pad cannot do that. A watch box solves it with a pillow and a deep base.
Ours is a square rigid box made to the size of the watch and its pillow. The person opening it sees the dial first and the strap second.
- Microbrands selling their own watches direct
- Independent jewellers who sell second-hand and refurbished watches
- Strap makers who sell a watch and strap as a set
- Corporate teams giving a watch for a retirement or long-service award
- Wedding parties buying matching watches for groomsmen
How does a lift-off watch box open?
The standard build is two pieces. A lid sits over the base and lifts straight off. Air escapes slowly around the walls, so the lid comes away with a gentle pull.
We often make the lid full depth, so it covers the base to the table. Closed, the box looks like a single solid block, which suits a watch well.
The two-piece style is the same as our lift-off lid boxes, scaled down and deepened for a pillow.
Can I have a hinged watch case instead?
Yes. Our photo shows a hinged case: black leather-look wrap, a beige lining and a pillow sitting in the base. The lid is joined at the back and opens to about upright.
A hinged case keeps the lid attached, so the watch can live in it on a shelf. A lift-off box is faster to fill and stacks more neatly in an outer carton.
If you prefer the case style, our hinged lid rigid cases show how the hinge is wrapped.
What size watch box do I need?
Start with the case diameter and the lug-to-lug length, then the strap length when closed on the pillow. A 42 mm watch on a medium pillow needs about 100 x 100 mm inside.
Height is set by the pillow and the crown. Allow the dial plus 10 mm under the lid, so the glass never touches the lining.
Thick divers and chronographs need a taller pillow and more height. If in doubt, our guide on clearance and inside sizes has worked examples.
Which pillow or insert suits a watch?
The pillow is the heart of a watch box. It needs to be firm enough to hold a metal bracelet and soft enough to curve a leather strap.
Each option is cut to your watch. Our guide to rigid box inserts compares how they feel in the hand.
| Insert | What it does | Best with |
|---|---|---|
| Soft pillow | Strap wraps round it and holds the watch upright | Leather and fabric straps |
| Firm pillow | Denser filling that does not sag under a bracelet | Steel and titanium bracelets |
| Foam with a slot | Holds the watch flat with the strap folded under | Slim, flat dress watches |
| Pillow plus tray | Pillow at the front, a card tray behind for a spare strap or papers | Sets with a second strap |
Board, wrap and finishes for watch boxes
Greyboard forms the walls, and you can ask for a thicker sheet. A heavier board gives a watch box weight, which buyers link with value.
Leather-look and textured wrap papers suit watches. They hide fingerprints and feel close to a strap. Smooth printed wrap is the choice when you want a pattern or a full-colour lid.
As options, the lid can take a soft touch, matt or gloss laminate, a foil logo, an embossed or debossed mark, or spot UV. A small debossed logo on a dark wrap looks like a stamp in leather, and how each rigid box finish behaves is covered in our guide.
Why does presentation matter more for a watch?
Watches are often bought months after someone first sees them. The box is part of what they have been waiting for.
Owners also keep watch boxes for resale. A clean box with the pillow still in place helps a watch hold its value later, so it is worth choosing a wrap that ages well.
For retirement or award watches, the lid can carry a company crest. Teams often pair it with our corporate gift boxes for staff awards.
Should a watch box have a sleeve or band?
A printed sleeve slides over a lift-off box and carries the details a watch box lid should not. Model name, reference number and a short care note can sit on the sleeve, while the lid stays clean with one logo.
Sleeves also help when you sell several models in one box size. You order one box and change the sleeve per model, which keeps the box stock simple.
A paper band is the lighter choice. It wraps once around the box, holds the lid on, and is torn or slid off at opening. Both are made in card and printed to match the wrap, and we show them on the same proof as the box.
How should a watch box be posted?
The boxes reach you made up, lids on. When you send a watch on, keep the watch box inside a snug outer carton with about 15 mm of packing all round.
Pack the box flat, never on its side, so the watch stays on the pillow. A paper band or ribbon tie around the box stops a lift-off lid working loose on the way.
If you need help planning outer cartons, our team can talk it through on the contact page for phone and WhatsApp.
Which watch box mistakes are easy to avoid?
Most watch box problems are about height and the pillow, not the print.
- Measuring the case but not the crown, so the watch rubs the side wall
- Choosing one soft pillow for a heavy steel bracelet that then sags
- Leaving too little height, so the lid presses on the glass
- Using a shallow lid that slides off when the box is picked up by the lid
- Forgetting space for a warranty card or spare strap
How do I order custom watch boxes?
Every order is quoted in writing, based on the watch size, the pillow and the wrap you pick. Most buyers start with one box size and add more later.
Send your measurements on the quote form for rigid boxes, with a photo of the watch if you have one.
- Send the case size, lug-to-lug length and strap type.
- Choose lift-off or hinged, and the pillow or insert.
- Pick the wrap, the lining and any finish on the lid.
- Check and approve the free design proof.
- Production takes 4–6 business days after approval.
- Free tracked UK delivery follows in 2–3 business days.
Watch Boxes: questions
Can the watch pillow be taken out?
Yes. The pillow sits loose in a slot, so the owner can lift it out to put the watch on and back again.
Will a watch box fit a metal bracelet?
Yes. We use a firmer pillow for steel bracelets and size it to the closed bracelet so it does not slide off.
Can one box hold two watches?
Yes. A wider box with two pillows side by side is common for his and hers sets or a watch and a spare.
Is there room for a warranty card in a watch box?
We can add a card tray under the pillow or a pocket in the lid lining for papers.
Can the lid lining carry a printed message?
Yes. A line of text or your logo can be printed or foiled inside the lid on request.
Do watch boxes suit pocket watches?
Yes. A pocket watch lies flat in a shallow foam cavity with a channel for the chain, so the box is much lower.
How heavy does a watch box feel?
That depends on the board thickness you choose. A thicker greyboard gives a heavier, more solid box.
Can a watch box have a magnetic closure?
The lift-off and hinged styles close without magnets. If you want a magnetic flap, ask and we will suggest a magnetic closure box with a pillow insert.
Can I order watch boxes and strap boxes in one wrap?
Yes. We can make a slimmer box for straps in the same wrap and finish and quote both together.
Is a leather-look wrap real leather?
No. It is a textured paper with a grain that looks and feels like leather.
What is the difference between watch boxes and your jewellery cases?
Watch boxes are deeper and built around a pillow. The wider jewellery and watch boxes range covers pads, slots and drawers for other pieces.
How do I know the pillow will fit my watch?
